Have any of you looked in to converting to propane?

I have not even thought about it, but I just did a Google search (key words: propane automobile conversion) and found a ton of information.

Looks like something worth checking into!!!

I know for carbureted engines, you have to double the size of the main jet, not sure how that would work with FI. Also have you seen the price of propane?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
This is a brave step into the potentially expensive engine explosion. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Do let me know how you get on - good on you. . .

Have you looked at a natural gas conversion. I used to work for a large natural gas provider. All their service trucks were converted to run on natural gas.

Some things to consider
  • Vehicles can be converted to run bi-fuel. They could run on gasoline or natural gas.
  • The natural gas fuel tanks were much more impact resistant than gasoline fuel tanks. I've seen some of the test videos. It's amazing what the pressure tanks can withstand.
  • I haven't checked the price of natural gas these days. I don't know if it's as economical as it once was.
  • For a time there were tax breaks that would cover almost 100% of the conversion costs. It may be worthwhile to check if these are still available.
  • The engine wear decreased dramatically when running 100% natural gas.

Good luck and let us know how to goes.

Not convenient in the US...

On another note, handreds of LNG stations in England... better mileage, half the price... maybe one day... but doubtful...

If I could find injectors & fuel pump and get some info on how propane injection works (liquid injection, I assume) and is it true you have to crank it on gasoline, I'd think strongly about converting, just to get the 113 octane and run some REAL compression. All the systems I've seen are with a mixer fitted over the carb and some kind of voodoo AFR control.

In GA, you get an inspection that the entire gasoline fuel system is removed as an alternate fuel vehicle, and that's the last one you get. No emissions inspections and you get to ride in the HOV lane.
