Getting the Wheeling Fever
Will there be any tricks I need to watch out for when I do this swap? The 304 is coming out of a 78 CJ7 and the 360 going in it is from an 89 Grand Wagoneer. The engines look (while still in the vehicles) pretty much identical. Will the computers work too or will I need the one from the Wagoneer?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Gary

If you can find a ECU on a 89 Wag I'd like to see it.
The ignition modules should be the same, provided they are Ford Dura Spark2 systems.
The main hitches are.. the flywheel from the 304 will bolt onto the 360 but it will shake you to death, AMCs are balanced off the flywheel, so you need a rarer 360 flywheel (if running a manual tranny) otherwise the flex plate from the 360 will work fine.
Second is you have to keep the 304 exhaust manifolds.

Thats it.

Have fun.

I don't know much about the technical stuff so I don't know if you're serious about the ECU. Because to tell you the truth I don't even know what it is.
I have a turbo 400 so I guess I'm good with the flexplate. Why would I need to keep the exhaust manifolds? Are they different? I'm going to get the ones that come with the 360 but I'll still have the ones for the 304 too.
Thanks,
Gary

Supe was being cute about the ecu... We all are cute from time to time..
Prolly the difference in the manifolds will ne where the pipe outlets are placed in them.. The 304 will fit all the normal piping of your jeep and the 360 ones will have to have hand made pipes if possible at all.

Oh, well that explains it. The post was just missing a smiley face. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Yeah, I got to thinking about the comment and how I phrased my question then I realized what I was calling the computer was actually the ignition module.
I'm just hoping to get this thing running again, it's been a long time. The original problem with the 304 was the cam and distributer gears were getting chewed up. I replaced a bunch of stuff and it still doesn't run. So I gave up and decided to just replace the whole engine.
Will keep you posted.
Thanks,
Gary

Just thought I'd give y'all an update. Man, does time fly? Here it is over a year later and the Jeep's already been sitting for about four months.
It's running pretty well and even passed the smog test.
I did have to use the 360's exhaust manifolds but they bolted right up to the exhaust pipes. Needed to take out a lot of the vacuum hoses too. Also ended up swapping the 360's oil gauge sending unit for the 304's. The flex plates were different too.
Amazingly it ended up going together pretty well.
Now if I don't sell it first, I might take it out on the trail in a couple months. Right now it's time for snow skiing though.
Thanks for all the help.
Gary

I assume you have an auto tranny. I think that you'll find that the stall speed of the torque converter may increase 100 or 200 rpms due to the increased torque of the 360 over the 304 - assuming that both are stock.

Yes, I have a Turbo 400. Not sure about the tranny because I had work done to it. Seems like a valve body was replaced because it wouldn't shift to the next gears very well. I think it was a high performance part. What will the increase in stall speed mean?
Thanks,
Gary
