I have a 2003 Doublecab, v6 and auto and when I shift out of 4wd, it feels like it is slamming out of 4 wheel. There is a loud bang, and the whole truck shakes from the shock. Any clues as to what this is?

Is it pushbutton 4WD? Are you stopped when shifting? In neutral?

It has a pushbutton on the 4wd shifter, button for 4-high, shifter for 4-low. Regardless of what gear it is in, even neutral, when I push the button, it won't disengage until I put into drive, or reverse, and move a foot or so. Then it slams out of 4wd.

You've checked all the obvious I'm assuming.
Different tire sizes (do you rotate your tires?) I'm not sure if different tire air pressures could effect the 4x4. Maybe the rears are worn down much more then the front (or vice-versa)?
That's all I can think of right now... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

What kind of surface are you driving on when it happens?

To me, it sounds normal for an AT.
My '94 AT used to do this - shift from 4Hi to 2 and there'd be a significant thunk. Got used to it after a few times.
It may also help if you discuss when this happens and under what circumstances - ie are you moving at speed, going from 4Lo to 2, etc etc.

Are you on a hard surface, and more importantly have you turned while in 4x4? If so, try rolling strait for a while before disengaging and see if the clunk goes away. There's no diff between the front and rear and you can build up a bunch of tension in the driveline if you turn while in 4x4; especially if you're on pavement or rock, etc.. That can make a clunk/bang when you take it out of 4x4.

Sounds like a tire size problem if you have to go into reverse to get 4wd disengaged - been there with a mid-80's subaru. Even same size but mismatched brand and wear could cause a prob.
Does it roll with little resistance when driving straight on hard surface and in 4wd?
