O-k...looking for some suggestions here. On the way home today I was cruising on the freeway when the ole monty started to miss. I slowed down and it runs fine untill about 2500-3000 rpm when it starts to miss. It only does it in 4th and 5th gear. I pulled the plugs to discover that #1 and #4 cylinder plugs had a "crust" on them. The other plugs looked fine. I checked the wires and all the connections on the coil. Everything checked out fine... What could cause this?

It was like a brownish color. And I'm not saying like a fine crust. It was pretty thick. Like between 1/16 and 1/8 of an inch for lack of a better way to describe it...

they had the normal light brownish look on the electrode insulator...

I assume your using all the same type and heat range of plugs Anyways just change them out with some factory plugs NKG's and see what happens. Don't waste your $$$ on any of those fancy aftermarket ones.

The two inside plugs burn different than the outside due to the design of the intake manifold. How many miles on these plugs?

And what had the gap opened up to? My money is on .050.

Are the deposits dry crusty, or oily crusty? You might suspect a water leak at the base of the carb, fender side.

plugs have maybe 10-15k on them and the gap was still at the correct setting. The crust was dry... As far as the missing, i changed the coil and the problem is solved...but the plugs have me baffled....

Check all the head bolts for tightness. Pressure test the radiator and listen at the carb for the leak.

so a coolant leak may cause the plugs to build up deposits...hmmm...that could be it considering that small hose from the carb to the intake broke spewing coolant everywhere the other day...
