Yep, they likely are stock...but only for your model year. Toyota used a slightly different igntion system for '94 model 22REs. And I see yours is a '94. I'm not sure what the other differences were, but one of them was smaller/thinner plug wires and I believe a different type of connector to the cap.

If I recall correctly, and I could be wrong, this system was prone to problems and Toyota reverted back to the old style ignition for the '95 model year, before switching over to Tacoma production.

The thinner plug wires were used on '93 models also. Yes they are OEM.

I've also heard that '94-95 models seem to have the timing chain failure problem happen a little earlier than prior models. I've heard of one '94 chain needing replacement at just over 60K miles and another at well under 100K. So, keep a close eye on yours, unless the chain/guides have already been changed.

What would cause this?

Huh, thats interesting. I wonder why Toyota did this?
I also wonder if there'd be any problem switching back to the older style cap and wires or if there'd be any real benefit besides getting rid of the funky looking micro-wires.

Timing chain and guides were done about 10k ago so I should be fine in that department.

wow, didn't know toyota switched systems again in the 90s. i thought the last revision was in '89 with the TCCS EFI.

makes me happy i've got a '91, but i already did the timing chain and eliminated that cruicial link...

I went to try to upgrade the wire on my '93 V6 and found that I CAN'T. In 1992 Toyota decided to change the plug type on the distributor cap to to the small 'male' type coupler w/ the plastic cap. Dunno if they did that on the 22re as well. Nobody seems to make a larger wire for this type. I even tried to fit an older cap on but found that they had changed the hole pattern on the srews that hold the cap on. We are suck with the tiny OEM style wires. For the price difference the Toyota wires are WAY nicer then the NGK or whatever "OEM style" jobbies.

I have a 94 which has the thin grey plug wires. I wanted to upgrade after the rebuild to NGK but the set I bought didn't fit right so I just went back to the stock wires. The wires didn't fit tightly into the cap or coil. I have heard these are more prone to arking out since they are so thin.

so the terminals on the late caps are male, like a chevy HEI cap? sounds like you could get a set of taylor wires and be fine there.

I don't buy everything OEM, but in my experience, the OEM plug wires really do last 60K plus miles with no problems. When I've used aftermarket wires, years and years ago, they always cracked, and wore out sooner. The OEM wires also seem to fit better.

It might be possible that modern day aftermarket wires "might" be just as good for a cheaper price, but I don't mind spending the extra money on wires that I don't have to worry about for a number of years after I put them on.

For more expensive parts like that, you might do a search for marked down Toyota parts on the net.

Well I guess boith styles are 'male' The older style uses the "open" looking prong on the wire end and plugs into a larger whole (5 or 6mm?) on the cap. I believe this is the HEI style wires as they would also fit over the little 'knobs' on chevy style distributors (I think). I bought a set of MSD wires thinking they were all the same even though the book said '86-91 only. Nice 8.5mm wires that were half the cost of OEM wires but they didn't fit and I had to take them back.

The ones I have use a small, narrow prong on the wire and plug into a small (~3mm) whole in the cap w/ the little plastic cap which snaps on soundly . Seems pretty propriatary to me.

Can't seem to eve find a pic of the new style. Here is the older style:
