timing belt is good, and didn't appear to slip or anything. Does anyone know if other kia engines will interchange with that one, because I can find engines for newer sportages and sephias and ohter kias everywhere, but 1995 sportage engines are hard to find

If you really want a Mazda motor...

Mazda Longblocks with excellent warranty

I have personal experience with them on a Nissan 3.0 Liter V6 - Excellent!

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Someone once told me that a ford probe engine would fit. I have no idea if that is true or not. I have a 95 myself. I have to belive that you timing belt has slipped or something for all the cylinders to be down on compression. And hey I used to have an 84 b2000. I took off the tailgate because it was damaged and put on a net and that thing would get 35mpg on the interstate, but it did blow a head gasket and stand me in PA and I had to rent a U-haul truck and tow dolly just to get it home. Then I saw how easy it was to change the headgasket and carried a spare gasket and the tools with me behind the seat.
