I've searched this forum and ttora forum in regards to adjustment for the rear brakes; and having trouble as how to adjust them (either from the inside of the brake or outside?).
Here's my situation: This would be my 3rd time replacing my front rotors and pads with my truck only less than 95K. Mechanic advised me that my fronts are doing mostly of the work and the rear is not(suppose to be 70% front and 30% rear?), which warps the rotor. I've looked in both sites to find the adjustments for the rear and was getting confused as to which ones to adjust. I've used my truck to haul things around and not really off- roading (yet). Can anyone point me to a site that could possibly have pix on certain parts to adjust? I would like to adjust it from inside the drum and not going on reverse and slamming on the brake. I know it will only cost me $45 to get someone to do it, but I like working on my own truck and have done all the mods on my truck also. I would like just some helpful tips as to where a good site with pix on them so I wouldn't get lost and screw something up. Thank you in advance.

This is not a flameable (?) topic!

Perhaps this picture will help. There are 2 rubber grommets you remove from the brake backing plate. One allows access to a retainer (which you push out of the way), the other to a star wheel which you use to adjust your shoes:

I prefer to remove the tire/wheel and the drum itself to not only adjust properly, but also clean things up well so they can self-adjust.

u could pull the e-brake a bunch of times. then spin the drum, ur suposed to have a slight drag

or

thers a cable that leads to each drum. just pull the cable and spin the drum

I noticed that you have a 3" lift from your signature. Did you install a 3" Brake Proportioning Valve Bracket after you did your lift? If not, this will throw off how much pressure is applied to the rear brakes vs. the front. The BPV works by a metal arm attatched to the axle and based on the height between the axle and frame, it adjusts the amount of brake pressure that is applied to the rear brakes. Since your truck is lifted 3", the mount on the axle needs to be moved 3" vertically as well to retain stock braking characteristics. "Mark in AZ" has a diagram to make a bracket that i used to build mine for my truck when i did my 3" lift. PM him to get a copy of it. Only took about 30 minutes to get it all fabed up and installed. If you have an auto try going slowly in reverse and applying the parking brake a bunch of times (more or less as suggested in a post above). This worked on my 02 runner. Problem with the auto is that people almost never use the parking brake. Cheapest fix ever.

As I'm going on reverse, do I need to be going fast and pull the e-brake?? I tried going on reverse (fairly fast) and using my other foot to push on the brake-----> caused my check engine light to come on <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />; but went away in a couple of days. I'll try what little john recommended and see what it does. Thank you for the helpful advise guys <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />!!

ps: also, I do have the BPV bracket, it came with the toytec lift kit.

Oh that's good. I thought i would throw it out there since i would be pissed after i tore apart my brake system and then realized it was something super simple, lol.

All right, I got it diagnosed for the 2nd time and the tech gave me a different diagnosis from the first one (different shop). This truck is driving me crazy!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/angry.gif" alt="" />
Let me know what you guys think-----> pls bare with me.

1st Tech - diagnosed it with broken right front speed sensor and deceleration sensor ($1400 parts and labor).
2nd Tech - diagnosed it with since the ABS light is on the braking system is all jacked up that the braking proportion is not all equal-----> which ABS actuator needs to be replaced............WOW $$$$$!!!!!

How it started: did a panic stop last year and ABS light and airbag light came on; but looked into 4x4wire post and seems like having and not having an ABS is not an issue....so left it alone (probably why braking proportion is not distributed evenly, which screws up my front rotor).

Present day: Once in awhile the ABS light goes off; which gives me good braking. I've noticed right before the ABS light comes on upon braking, I've notice something grinding or a winding up spring on my right foot (gas foot) when applying the brakes (Master brake cylinder??)and could not slow down and have to pump the brakes from me to stop------>thats some scary sh*t!!

Conclusion: Don't have the funds to get it fixed the right way ( will cost over $2000 for repairs), thought about driving it to a telephone pole and just pay the deductable ($500)which is much cheaper to get it fixed; one thing I don't have an airbag <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />
Any recommendations?? ........I hate to trade it in, truck is already paid for.

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS FOR MY TRUCK NOT TO GIVE ME ANYMORE PROBLEMS!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />
