I have searched the site for "Air Pump" posts and now have a pretty good understanding of what the purpose is, BUT has anyone tried to rebuild one or take it apart to replace the bearings? My pump is starting to make a very annoying squeak and it needs to be fixed - any insights appreciated.

My 86 factory service manual refers to it as a replacement part, no rebuild info. Later 2.6L pumps are pretty much the same though. I've never seen bearings or parts available for them, just whole replacements.

Well you can take the air pump apart and regrease the bearing.
Take the air pump off the mounts and on the back are 4 or 5 - 13mm bolts.
Remove the bolts and carefully tap off the rear panel - note there is a small mounting shaft near one of the bolts - give it some lub and tap gently.
The back panel will come off and expose the shaft, bearings and innards. Regrease or addsome, clean it up, spray on some rust inhibtor, line up the shaft and replace.
All is now quiet!
