Is rust on a spindle (sat out for a while) that bad? Should the rust be cleaned off before using the spindle? If so, what would be the best method?

Thanks in advance!

I use a wire wheel mounted on an electric motor for cleaning up rusted stuff. Or enery cloth and elbow grease!!!!

Thanks! I've got a dremel-like tool with wire wheels, but I was afraid of putting too many scratches on the spindle. I also have some polishing wheels that I was thinking of trying. I just didn't know whether the rust was a big deal or not. It's more like rust spots.

Is that a variation of toe jam? Takes a while to save up a usable ammount, I bet.... <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/barf.gif" alt="" />

A wire wheel won't scratch the spindle. You can also try steel wool or one of the synthetic abrasive pads. The other thing that works well is the CLR or LimeAway bathroom cleaner. Both are phosphoric acid-based, just like Naval Jelly and do the same thing.

Thanks to everyone for the responses. I know about CLR and should have thought about that. I have no idea where to get naval jelly so I think I'll try the CLR.

Thanks again! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Any decent hardware store will have it, a pink gel in a small bottle.
