Getting the Wheeling Fever
Has anyone had their timing belt slip?

Two weeks ago my Rodeo lost power whilst on my way to work. I made a soft pop sound and lost power. I was at ~2200 RPM, 65 MPH.

I checked the DTC codes right after it happened and got; bank 2 sensor 2 O2 volts low, multiple cylinder misfire and MAF sensor something. I did this whilst stranded along side the road.

Fortunately I have AAA (got it for my daughter, guess who used it first) so I called them and trailer it to the dealer. Normally I would have taken it home, but I had to go to Brazil for work and wouldn't return for 7 days.

The dealer had a hard time determining the cause, but concluded the drivers side bank cylinders 1,3& 5 (?) jumped out of time. The guy worked 8 hours getting everthing back in time. He said he had to take the valve covers off to align the cam lobes. He checked all the drive pins on the cams to cam gears and said they were good. He also clean my EGR pipe and replaced the valve. It cost $712.

I finally got it back yesterday. It runs good. My concern is will it will it jump time again?

If you want something done right do it yourself two or three times!

Body Damage is Cool
YOU NEED TO ASK THEM HOW AND WHY HE HAD TO ALIGN THE CAM LOBES??????????????????,GREAT TRICK I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THOSE CAMS HMMMM ADJUSTABLE CAM LOBES AMAZING, THE CAMS ARE GEAR DRIVEN, THERE IS NO WAY THEY COULD HAVE JUMPED TIME WITH OUT DOING MAJOR ENG DAMAGE , POSSIABLE BELT JUMPED , BUT THAT IS VERY RARE EVEN WITH A BAD TENSIONER , THE CVRS DO NOT HAVE TO BE REMOVED TO SET THE BELT TIMING , JUST TO DO A BELT DEPENDING OF THE LABOR RATE AT THE DLR , THE BELT SHOULD BE ABOUT 65.00 AND THE TENSIONER ABOUT 75.0 THE REST IS LABOR FOR ABOUT A 4 HR JOB, PRICE MAY NOT BE OUT OF LINE BUT HIS EXPLANATION SURE THE HELL IS JERRY

If your tensioner was bad and stuck in position it could let the belt slip. I had it happen on my mitsu but thats a completely different design. The belts will stretch but the tensioner should keep it tight. '99s have non interferance engines so if it slips or breaks there should be no damage. Should not have to take off the valve covers to line everything back up again unless the belt breaks or slips ALOT. I wouldnt think it would slip more then a couple "teeth" for the cams though. With everything else lined up he should have been able to see it was off a bit and line them back up just by the timing marks.
