I have made a verbal agreement to buy this 87 YJ 4.2L BA10 from a friend of mine. The peugot trans 3rd gear synchro is gone as it grinds into 3rd, w/ no other symptoms. I could build the BA10 but rather get a better trans ie the AX15. I am aware that most BA10's have 21 spline outputs (not all). When I build this xfercase for him several years ago, I do not remember which his was. (I did search and did not find a clear answer to this) and do I have to swap the clutch. Most books list the clutches being different. The 258 in it is from an 85 CJ7, which I installed for him. (The temp sender not being there was the only hang up) Do I need to swap starters? Driveshafts? Thanks for any input. BTW this is not a rush, The trans still works, just grinds occasionally. Matt

Measure the length of the new tranny opposed to the old tranny. If there is any difference, you will need new shafts. When you get the AX 15 get the t-case with it, that way you can bolt it in as one unit.

Congratulations, I guess, Of all the Jeeps in the world.... I hope you got a good deal, I know you did. Sounds like you got yourself a project! The np 207's used a 23 spline input shaft with automatics and 21 splines on manuals, yours must be the latter. Better do like sunder says get a transmission,T-case combo. Hell, might as well get a 4.0 too while you're at it..Check out those wrecked YJ's Pupp was talkin' about. See ya Friday!

I have that 96 XJ case that has the long 23 spline input. Worse comes to worse, I will just swap that one out to the short 23 spline(or what ever the trans needs) I do agree that it would be a good idea to buy the Xfer case and trans together but I would like to see if I can use this case I have. The XJ came with the short ext housing on the NP231 and the bellows style boot over the output spline and slip yoke. They are gravy to turn into SYE. What about that BA10 clutch and flywheel? Will it work in a AX15? Or will I have to swap it all out?
I have heard that a 4.0L head will bolt to a 4.2L block. But at this point, I don't know the particulars like pushrods, rockers, Valves ect. That's for a future project. It has the offenhauser 4bbl intake and 500CFM Edlelbrock performer w/ off road kit (installed by me) now, and it works fine, plenty of power. Thanks for the replys.

What about that BA10 clutch and flywheel? Will it work in a AX15? Or will I have to swap it all out? On the 1989 model year the BA10 and the AX15 were both used. looking up the part number for a clutch kit at autozone.com shows the same part number on each for a clutch kit. They do ask which transmission you have to insure getting the right part. Go figure. You'd think one of these Techs here would know! I suspect the flywheel is the same. Bottom line is, I have no idea!

Pete somewhere in there is a starter change because of the flywheel offset. Check the starter too if the starter and flywheel will interchange you have a fit.. Big Jim

From looking at NAPA online, it appears the starter is the same, the clutch and flywheel are the same just the slave cylinders are different. The clutch kits parts numbers are different by one letter tacked on the end because of the Slave cyl/throwout-bearing assembly. Dang! Parts for those things are expensive compared to the old CJ's! Wyleone, do you have an AX15 located? At some point they went to an external slave cylinder, I don't know what year the change took place tho..I don't think the internal ones are particularly troublesome but if your throwout bearing goes bad you have to change the whole unit, 150 bux at NAPA. waaaaaaaaaaaa! I'd try to find a newer one with the external cyl! If the slave goes you don't have to pull the tranny and if the T/O bearing goes you don't have to spend megabux to replace it.

Yes the BA10 has the internal slave, like a Ford Ranger. The AX15 has it mounted on the bellhousing ouside. I just installed a new slave in it the Saturday before the Mobile ride. I drove this YJ on that ride. A new slave is required but the hardline can be changed out to match it to the new slave. Thanks Bigjim for the starter thoughts. The one that is on there is on the right side (I think all 4.2/4.0 are) and is big as a coffee can. I will watch for any differences. No I don't have one yet Pete, I am just making sure I find the right one. I don't want to haggle for the wrong one. It will be January before I get a title. I will not drop any $$ in it before I get the title. See ya tonight Pete.

The AX15 has it mounted on the bellhousing ouside. The older AX15's have the slave inside like the BA10. 94 and later should be external. (on Wranglers anyhoo)

Thanks Pete, I think I will look for the older AX15 w/ the internal slave. It will be more likly to match any clutch or starter cofig w/ the BA10. I checked out Advanced Adapters, If I wanted to, an AX5 from a TJ will bolt to the NP231 I have in the Jeep now. I know the AX5 will not bolt to a 4.2L. Maybe the bell housings swap?
I will deal with the grinding 3rd in the BA10 until I get some other stuff taken care of unless someone has a killer deal on an AX15 or gives me a BA10 that I can use for parts.
