What to do with 95 SR

Earlier this year on my 95 SR 3.5 DOHC my crank bolt sheared off, here are two threads about it: First Thread Secod threadDue to time constraints and other commitments, I have only thus far removed the broken half of the crank bolt from the engine. The radiator and all other parts around it are sitting in my garage. The Montero is in the driveway and my wife told me today fix it or get rid of it. (this is about the 5th time she has said this, so the threat is real <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" />) I don't want to lose the only 4x4 I have, but I don't want to pay $1000-$1,500 to get this job finished. I thought I could do this myself, after reading some posts here about some of you changing timing belts and things. And maybe I could, but I have a friend telling me that the timing is probably already off and if I don't get the timing right, the engine will be trashed when I try to drive it with the timing off. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> I haven't gotten any quotes from mechanics, so my estimate could be way off. I am willing to put $400-600 total into it if that would do it. I am sure I could sell it for $2500-3000 if it was running, now I would get probably only $500, but of course I would keep it if I got it fixed most likely. Anyone know of a mechanic in So Cal who could help me out here? Someone looking for extra work from a dealership or?? I do have intermediate abilities, I always do my own brakes, have done some other minor work. Anyway... just fishing for ideas and suggestions. Thanks a lot!

I would expect it would be "easy" to retime the engine since there should be timing marks on the block and the pulleys.
Also, I believe the 3.5DOHC engine is in the online FSM's on that russian site if you haven't pulled it down yet.
Do it your self bud. I know there's some real talent down south with guys like KevinC, JasonA, etc rebuilding, fabricating, and so on. I'm not going to volunteer anyone's help but perhaps someone can do it for you in trade or for something or for a bit of cash.
Either way, I hope you can get it fixed versus selling it or having to pay massive $$$$ for a dealership to do it.

Your friend gave you good advice - BUT - that doesn't mean you can't do the job. Get a new bolt, timing belt (and the other belts), timing belt tensioner and spring, water pump if you think you might need one soon and get to work undressing the front of the engine... once you have the timing belt covers off you can see the timing marks used to set the valve timing. Get some advice from the folks here if needed, but remember that nothing happens until you make up your mind you're gonna fix it and pick up a wrench and start turning bolts..... the job won't do itself - and even if you screw up, you can still get $500+ for it. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" /> Frank

I think your previous thread pretty much covers it...If you have not yet removoved the timing belt then the timing is not "off" yet. As long as you line up the marks when you reassemble, your good to go. You have already done the most difficult part, removing the busted half of the bolt from the crank, so the rest of the job is replacing the sprocket with the sheared pin and reassembling the front of engine. Dont Skimp on pulleys and tensioners. If you decide to just "get rid of it" give me a call and Ill drive up from Temecula, tow it home and give you 500 bucks...

Just curious, did you ever confront the dealer in Utah about this failure? I've never <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/ignore.gif" alt="" />(knock on wood) had an issue on my G-2, but experienced it on one of my G-1 trucks.

I figured it had been too long and too many miles, plus I live 5+ hours away. Too much hassle for me, maybe not for someone else...but.

That website won't let you view everything. ??? I was especailly interested in that parts manual.

Where can I download this? Here Thanks, but I don't see 1995 there, the closest is 98 and I think they had done away with my 3.5 DOHC by then. Well, I have gotten a stay of execution from my wife, as long as I start working on it. Thanks for the encouraging words.
