head bolt question #681333 12/31/05 08:55 PM

In the middle of tearing down my 22r for a rebuild and noticed that several of the head bolts have a significant buildup of carbon on them over the entire length, including the threads. This made these certain bolts alot harder to remove also. Where and how do you think this buildup is occuring?

Pretty much everything (pistons/head/valves) is covered in carbon/burnt oil buildup, but I found it odd to also be on a couple of the head bolts and not the rest. I can get some pics if that would help.

the buildup is from oil coking up in the holes -- from the factory the bolts are dipped in oil to keep from galling the threads.

the hardest bolts to remove are usually the 2 that are between the exhaust ports. i snapped one off on the last engine i did, craftsman bolt-outs work wonders!

that makes sense, so theres nothing to worry about there? allright, so after the rebuild, when im ready to put the head back on with new head bolts, I should oil them prior to installing correct?

i'd chase the threads first -- one of your old head bolts with a notch cut in the threads makes a great chaser tap.

at the very least, oil your new bolts. engnbldr's come with a nice copper based anti-sieze lube with them, i used that on my 22R-E. other than that, i like a good moly based assembly lube, especially the kind made by ARP <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
