Need a Spot
I am looking for ways to get a little more power out of my 3.0. I have read reviews for the Jacobs Pro Street Ignition system both on this site and others. It seems that most believe it te be poorly made and constantly breaking. I was wondering if any of you have tried this system and what you think of it.

Thanks

I've owned the 4Runner upon which the 4x4wire review was based for the last 5 1/2 years, and have had no trouble with it. I only drive it 1-2K miles/year, if that matters.

Is it worth it? Hard to say. I do know the thing will keep running down to practically 0rpm, and it has a little more power over 4000rpm than the one in my truck had. If you're going to spend money for power, though, I'd save my pennies for a 3.4 swap.

You want more power from your 3.0. The first thing you should do is to get rid of the crappiest designed exhaust system since Ford went to the overhead engine in 1954. Get rid of those stupid exhaust manifolds and put a set of headers on it. Did I do it to mine, no but mine is a trail only rig and may see 2,000K a year and my extra power comes from my gears, 207-1 in lo lo lo!!!!

Yep, headers are certainly the first thing. Come to think of it, maybe low gears are why mine'll run down to 0rpm.

I just read your review on the Jacobs Ignition and those are some inpressive numbers. What other mods did you have on that thing when you did the tests, was that an otherwise stock motor? Also for 150hp stock I was kinda dissapointed to see so little at the wheels, I wonder how far off of its stock flywheel HP it was?

I have been running a Jacobs system for almost 10 yrs now and have very little problem with that wasn't taken care of by Jacobs(now Mr. Gasket). I am not sure what the HP gains are w/my rig, but the mpg is up about 1-2 mpgs w/than when stock, and over all performance is better wthan w/o. In the 10 yrs I have had it I have had to have the coil replaced once(no charge lifetime warranty same for the spark plug wires), and I have had to replace the cpu once at 1/2 the cost and free shipping(replaced the cpu after Mr. Gasket bought Jacobs). I cannot comment on the newer system. The most important benefit that I have found from the Jacob's, is its ability to fire up the truck when the battery has been run down from either extended use or change in weather.

As OOP'S mentioned headers are the best way to increase performance, it was the last upgrade I did on my 3.0 due to them not being smog legal here in CAli when I was doing the opther upgrades. The one thing to keep in mind that no one mod to a 3.0 is going to gain that much, it takes a combo of upgrades before you begin to see the benefits, the upgrades also aren't cheap I have spent about $1500 upgrading mine. If you are looking for large gains in power your only real option is to do a 3.4 swap, that is until someone redesigns the 3.0 heads(to allow for more exhaust flow) or figures out a way to put Camry DOHC heads on the truck block.

I ran Jacobs on my 3.0 prior to the tragic traffic incident. It was the most expensive <1mpg and ~3-5hp at low rpms that I could have bought. A hot coil would have done as much.

Ignition is not where the inefficiencies in the 3.0 hide.

Had one in the ex's 4Runner. Loved it when it worked, but it would cut out from time to time, so I pulled it (pretty sure it was the anti-theft module). Over 1mpg gain, nice HP boost at upper RPMS. I really liked it. Then again, I didn't pay for it. smile

What is a hot coil? The jacobs review seemed to show good power in the upper useable RPM where you would really want it I'd imagine for passing etc.

A higher voltage and/or multiple discharge coil.

My observations were real world after trying it. I saw the graphs too, that's why I bought it. I was disappointed.
