This has probably been answered previously but I'd like to put some bigger tires on my truck. I have a 2002 Sportage 4X4, 5spd, shift-on-the-fly hubs. What's the biggest tire I can put on it, either LT (will an LT tire even fit) or P type? I don't off road it at all, it's my daily commuter car - 80 miles a day 5 days a week. I currently get about 26 - 27 MPG in the summer, it falls off a bit in the winter.

The biggest tire you can fit on the stock sporty would be an LT 235/75/15. You could have a little bit of rub on the fuel filler lines that you'll have to take care of by bending them out of the way a little bit. Actually I think i'm the only one that had that problem for some reason. It was only when it bottomed out on the highway. I would say will fit with no problem. Thats what I had with no lift and no other problems.

If you don't off road at all, I'd recommend only going up in size 1 to 2 sizes. This would take you to either a P215/75/15 or a P225/75/15. You could go as high as a P235/75/15, but like tlab said you could get some minor rubbing in the rear after hitting a bump at highway speed. New after market shocks would take care of this.
KYB makes some direct replacements that are a little firmer than stock.
As far as tires go, the Michelin LTX M/S are awesome street tires that handle great in the snow and ice. They do OK on hard packed dirt and gravel roads, but are just about the best riding tire you can get.
As you go up in tire size youÆll notice your mileage going down a bit, but this is because your speedometer or odometer is now off. Unfortunately there is nothing available to recalibrate the speedometer and you have to just do the math in your head.
Old revolutions per mile / new revolutions per mile * the speedometer or odometer reading.
This also works for recalibrating your speed so you don't get a ticket.

Am I mistaken or can I run 30/9.5/15 mudders on my Stock Sportage. Or is it 235/70/15 as big as I can go? I am running 235's now but was hoping to get some 30's, what can I expect?
If it ain't broke, it will be..

30's arent going to happen while stock. Stay with your 235's. If add a body lift and a 2.5 suspension lift you'll clear 30's.

Thanks for the advise.. I plan on a 4" suspension lift in the spring.. That should put me closer to where I want to be. May even go with a small body lift as well.. Any tips.. For now I will take your advise and stick with the 235's. . I figure if you know anything about the sportage you know more than me. .

I'm running the 1 3/8" body lift and a 2.5" suspension lift, and have no problems running 31x10.50x15s. In fact, I'm thinking of adding just a 1" spacer in the rear to put me back to level and allow me to move up to a 32x10.50x15 or 32x9.50x15.
But then again, if I add a winch and bumpers, I'll need to add spacers front and rear to allow me to stick with the 32s or switch to the 4" suspension lift.
Need to re-gear and add lockers before I do any of this though.
