I've been wondering for years why folks didn't take the good parts from the deuce, trash the heavy not-so-good parts, and build a hybrid axle from the remaining bits? Keep the axles and everything from the inner kuckles out... and sell/scrap the housing and top-loader. Toss in the center-section of your choice, and connect the knuckles with tube... for my taste, I'd want to rework the outers for disk brakes and a reasonable bolt pattern, but many folks are happy enough forcing pinion or driveshaft brakes to function as service brakes.

File this one under: idle thoughts not likely to ever happen.

I'm pretty sure Steve Gerstner put rockwell outers on a d70 or d80.

For a sami buggy I'd say a well built 44 should be enough. I'm running a 44 on my amigo, and have an identical one waiting to go into the buggy. Alloys and CTMs and I'll have few worries. That 35spline 44 seems kinda silly to me, you have to use 60 inner and outer knuckles, as well as custom axles and a semi custom locker. Only real benifit is a lighter smaller pumpkin. Kind of an expensive PITA way to get ground clearance IMHO.

Sounds a lot like the D50 that came under my '01 Superduty if you ask me (minus 35spl shafts of course)! But I'm with you, hardly worth building IMHO.

Well IÆm going to be spinning 39's on my Sami. And IÆm not sure of the power plant yet. Hopefully a VW diesel.

Either way 39Æs are pushing a 44. Even a built 44 can have issues if you put some torque behind it.

As for the Toy running Mogs; whatÆs so wrong with it?

He is running kind of tall tires for my taste. And he set it up pretty high. But the axel, air bags and link setup look pretty good to me.

Yeah, CTMs and alloys are great and all, but with tires that big, you'll start trashing balljoints on a D44... and to my knowledge, no aftermarket upgrade exists to address that.

For a sami I'd go built yota axles. longfields, detroit or arb, 6-stud knuckles, heat-treated r&p w/ spares cause that is all you wold break at that point. for the d44, you can do crane knuckles and run wheels with more BS to alleviate some of the stress on those components. my 2 cents in on the hijack there

OK I'll retract that statement. 37s are probably about the limit of even a built 44 IMHO. 39s would definitely be lookin for trouble, even on a lightweight rig.
