Getting the Wheeling Fever
I had my brakes flushed by a shop awhile back and did not really checked on their work; now I've noticed that they did not put back the "bobber thing" for the brake fluid reservoir. They just put the cap back on. What would that bobber do if I do not have it on the cap? Would it mess with my ABS??? I should have done it myself, but did not have the time that day, so I paid someone to screw it up!! Any info anyone. Thanks in advance.

Someone double check me, but is that "bobber" the float switch that turns on your brake light (idiot light on dash) when the fluid level gets too low? If yes, then I would definitely get that fixed asap! That idiot light saved my life once on an old truck when the master cylinder went bad and the fluid leaked out overnight on the first cold night of the year.

Never read it anywhere, but I've always wondered if one purpose of the "bobber" was to cover the exposed surface area of the brake fluid, (which is very hydroscopic, meaning it absorbs water) to minimize moisture absorption rate into the brake fluid..

and, as mentioned above, the bobber turns on the low brake fluid light

No, my brake light is not on, but my ABS light is. I've called one toyota shop and they said it only levels the fluid when cornering so the brake light doesn't come on. It just annoys me that I pay someone to do a ***** job, I could have done the ***** job myself and shaved myself some money.

Kind of like years ago, I took my first Toyota to the Oldsmobile/Toyota dealer in my little town to have the front wheel bearings repacked. Back then I wasn't into doing my own maintenance that much..

Saw the mechanic take my wheel bearings out, lay them on a dirty (and I'm sure gritty) concrete floor and then just add more grease and put them back in..

Brought it home pulled the bearings back out, cleaned all old grease (and grit the mechanic added) out with solvent and repacked.. Great motivator and major reason I started doing my own maintenance.

How do you repack the front wheel bearings? I spoke to a shop tech and they advised me that my truck is pressure sealed and cannot repack them. Is that true??? I wanted to do it my self. Is it hard?
