the part that has me the most concern isn't his D44 recommendation, but that he is selling the idea of a gearset "warping".

the rear diff will warp and destroy the gears.

The way I'm reading it, he claimed the axle will warp and therefore break the ring gear... not that the gear itself will warp.

yeah, i see what you're saying... still a kinda far fetched and extreme situation. you'd have be driving it for years with your teeth about to fall out of your head and your truck holding together before that would be possible.

Wow, thanks for all the quick replies. By the way, I have a 1995.5 Rodeo (should've stated that earlier, but I was in a hurry to get to work and it slipped my mind). The way I understood it, he was saying that the axle was aluminum, and, if pushed too hard, would warp causing the gears to be destroyed. I had never heard of this before, so it caught me by surprise. I'll definately be looking for another shop to do the install.

No, your axle is *not* aluminum. He may have gotten confused in that the 2nd gen Rodeos have a much different D44 which comes with an aluminum cover... the axle however is not.

The only truly aluminum D44's that I know about were under Grand Cherokee's and Corvette's I believe.

I was thinking he might be referring to the cover as opposed to the actual axle. Perhaps he was thinking if the diff came down on a rock or something too hard it could dent inwards causing the gears to be destroyed. I just wouldn't call that "warping".

I think the aluminum cover shatters rather then dents, and if it did the gears are much stronger so they would just shred the cover.

And his solution was to swap in a whole different axle <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" /> There are all kinds of aftermarket diff covers available... seems like putting one of them on would be the path of least resistance if there really was an issue.

I was thinking the same thing. The bad part is that he also mentioned one of the guys in his shop is in the planning stages of an sas for his Amigo. I'm wondering what tips he has for this guy!
