had a friend swap an 89 4runner motor to my 87 4runner. both are automatic. he is not familiar with auto trans. now trans won't down shift to passing gear. also, it seems to shift too quick when accelorating. we think that it may be a linkage or elec. problem. any help would be appreciated

Body Damage is Cool
Did you use the 89 ECU and the 89 tranny or the 87 ECU with the 89 tranny or the 87 ECU with the 87 tranny or...?

Well it would be a place to start trouble shooting. It would be best to use the ECU, engine and tranny (especially an auto) from the same year. I'd look into whether or not anything changed from 87 to 89. If nothing else maybe a sensor or wiring change.

Need a Spot
Don't forget about the tv cable adjustment. This being missadjusted could cause all those problems.

thank you!
i am pulling the tranny and many other parts from the 89.
i may have to put the new tranny in the 87. anyway, the 89 only has 116k and the 87 has 212K.
the throtle postion sensor was bad and the mechanic put a brand new one on. my friend looked at it yesterday and when i told him it was changed, he said that it has to be that adjustment, because it is sending the wrong info to the ecu.

i will let you know what happens. thanx!!!! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/patriot.gif" alt="" />
