unlike installing a lockrite on a 2 pinion axle, dont i have to take apart the carrier and reset the backlash b/c its 4 pinion?

Yes, you still have to remove the ring gear & carrier and set backlash. The difference in the 4 pinion is that you don't have to separate the ring gear to install the locker. You can get pretty close to keeping the same backlash by just marking the positions of your tabs & counting threads.

a dial indicator and magnetic base make things a lot easier. figuring out zero preload is a wee bit tricky, but not too bad. you don't need any extra preload on the carrier bearings if they're already broken in, according to the FSM.

Or just mark the adjuster rings and put them back in the marked position.

5VZ is right on.....just mark the adjusters.....remove case....take bolts out for case halves....install locker...torq case halves together....install case into 3rd and push the ring gear right up against the pinion.....install the ring side adjuster and screw it by hand all the way tight and you will see your mark is just a little past where it needs to be so back the adjuster off until it lines up where it needs to be.

Screw the other adjuster on and you may need a tool to make that mark line up. there ya go.

Now....now is the perfect time to crank some carrier bearing pre-load into those worn bearings....this will have the effect of increasing the ring and pinion strength due to less ring deflection. So simply tight each adjuster 2 or 3 holes and done. Adjust each one the exact amount....well, exact is not really that critical....but close to exact and there ya go

How'd it go? Oh ya....and don't forget tp rap on the bearing cap tops to help equalize/centralize the case between the tensioned bearings. D that with the 2 big bolts only 1/4 turn loose to let the races move around a little.....but don't hit them toooo hard.

I think you're missing the springs and that's all.
