I'm installing a new clutch - 84 Toyota 4x4 truck, 22r (carb). Following the factory service manual, I get to the steps that read: 3. Check diaphragm spring tip alignment Using a feeler guage and SST, measure the gap between the spring tips and the tool. Maximum gap: 0.5mm (0.020 in.). If the gap is excessive, adjust as follows.
4. If necessary, adjust springs Using SST, bend the springs to correct alignment.
I'm a little confused by this step in the install... I've installed the flywheel, installed the clutch disk, and installed the clutch cover/pressure plate. I used the alignment tool and torqued everything to specs... But I'm unsure how to proceed with making sure the spring tips are all in alignment with proper spacing... Where the factory service manual calls for a maximum gap of 0.5mm from spring tip to SST, I have about 0.25 inches! Of course, the clutch alignment tool I'm using may not be as big as the toyota SST... The ultimate question is - is it ok to ASSUME that the spring tips are all ok, or is it critical to make sure they are within a certain spec? All of the spring tips seem to be evenly spaced between each other... and they all seem to be evenly spaced from the clutch alignment tool... I'm just not sure if they are CLOSE ENOUGH to the clutch alignment tool... Any ideas?
