No blower fan- and it's not the alt! #691579 01/31/06 01:29 AM

So, after a new alternator I was happy to have heat and defrost again in the freezing cold winter. Not one week after it was working again, I have the heater on and I smell a faint burning smell. A few minutes later it's still lingering, and I notice that the fan is no longer working. BAH HUMBUG.

I immediately thought it was the often discussed resistor pack, but even the highest setting wont work. Then I thought for sure the blower motor has bit the dust. I pulled it out and checked it with 12 volts - and the motor works fine! So, I tested the leads to the blower with a voltmeter. No juice! So, before I start tearing apart the dash and search for a short of some kind, has anyone else had this problem before?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
It seems the wires to the blower motor on 1st gen troopers
get pretty hot and cause the fan to cut out occasionally.
I had this problem this summer, but it seems to have gone away for the time being. Some one had posted that they had rewired the blower motor with larger gauge wires with success.

Blower Problems

If mine start acting up again I have a spare blower motor that I will install with new wires.

Does the fan work on HIGH? If so, it is your resistor pak, which is bypassed on the High setting. Otherwise, see above...

There is no juice going to the fan leads on any setting (see above). So, does this mean I have to go through all the wiring and find the problem? What baffles me is the burning smell; the fuse isn't blown and the motor works fine.

There is a fuse in the resistor block that could be blown. If it is the fan won't run in any speed.

^ This is what I found to be the case when mine wasn't working...
I replaced the fuse/resistor-block with a junkyard piece, and it's been working fine ever since.

Pull the thing out again and take a very close look at all of the connections - some of which are almost impossible to get a good look at because of the configuration... Perhaps a flashlight might help.

Six Isuzus, so far... still have three of them.
