Need a Spot
the 22re in my 1985 4runner is tired. I bought a 1988 4x4 pickup with a 1994 22re in it. I want to put this engine in my 4runner. Is there something different on the wiring or fuel injection between 1985-1987 and 1988-1994 because I have been seeing there are computer chips on ebay for the 1988-1994 22re. but not the earlier ones. I would like to put this later engine in my 4runner and still be able to put one of the chips on it. I am trying to see what will have to be done to put this engine in the 1985 4runner. Thanks

Body Damage is Cool
There were variations in the engine computers and the ignitors over the years. I think they changed almost every year from '85 to '88 and then (verify this first) '89 - '92 were the same, then '93 - '95 were the same.

If you want to run that '94 motor in your '85 you'll probably need an engine wiring harness, a chassis wiring harness and the correct ECU (engine computer). You'll basically have to rewire your whole truck or do a lot of splicing of your old chassis harness. The '94 has different O2 sensor wiring and needs a VSS signal from the transmission (if I remember correctly). -- Matt

the easiest way is to ubolt the manifolds from the new engine and swap on your old manifolds/sensors/wiring.

the upper intake plenum on the '94 is more desirable, so you might want to swap that on.
