im still having some trouble trying to get power from my 84' truck. i thought i was having carb problems but now i think timing could be the culprit. my truck makes full power and falls flat on its face at 4000 almost every time. could my vacum advance not be working properly? i have another dist for this truck.

On the carbies, you remove and plug the vacuum advance, then set your timing to 0 dg tdc. When you hook the vacuums back up, you should see it advance to right around 8 dg.

If you have a vacuum tester, you can hook up right off the distributor with the cap off and observe the motion if working.

Consider also the signal generator; those give up, tho' once in a great while.

EGR and plate aren't all carboned up, or have you looked yet?
