I just acquired a diesel trooper, and I can't find any compilation of what year's parts fit what vehicles... Researching this question led to my initial irritation that most aftermarket parts list 87-91 as a good range of interchange, but almost no one makes parts for the 84-86. Why?

Also, I need to replace pretty much the entire interior. What is the latest year that I can interchange/ cannibalize seats? Is there a better idea than looking for replacement trooper seats? Can I veer into the amigo line at all? Does this thread have any diesel content yet....?

I really am looking forward to using this as my daily driver, as I am out on forest property or driving most days. Any advice with regards to maintenance, things to worry about, easy (cheap) comfort upgrades?

I'm sorry if this is sorely basic.

Even though it may not look it from the outside, there were major changes mid-year in '87. Both front and rear axles changed (for the better). In the gas versions, the trannies changed, which means different cross-members, etc. Most all the body and interior stuff is the same.

You don't display where you live - but I had my entire interior redone 2 front seats/back for <$400. You would never no they were not OEM. Salvage yards and E-bay for the little odds and ends. I suppose you are missing the R rear bumper cap...right?
They are simplistic to maintain. A Chilton manual is a good start.
Other than seats what are you looking for?

I'm in NC. I'm really talking about the *entire* interior, like door panels, headliner, carpet, etc... but thinking I may just leave the panels off, paint them or herculiner and get a full vinyl or rubber mat for the floor. I think I may pull the dash out and paint that to match whatever I paint the exterior. It's a project, for sure...

If you have any suggestions about what seats would fit, especially ones with a heater option, that'd be great.

About the only thing that is totally solid on the thing is the engine, which is strange since they were notorious for not being durable. Isuzu actually replaced the first engine under warranty, so I'm running the 200k truck on a 100k engine. Watching the temp levels like a hawk...

TOMMY I HAVE A COMPLETE SET OF DOOR PANELS AND REAR SIDE PANELS FOR AN 86 T DSL TRROPER THAT HAVE BEEN RHINO LINED AND ARE ARE SOLID PANELS MADE FROM SOME SORT OF BOARD AND THEY ARE IN PERFECT CONDITION, I AM JUST NORTH OF ATLANTA, ALLSO A LOT OF THE DOOR PANELS AND THE HOOD SIDES ARE COATED WITH THIS STUFF ALLSO JERRY

I totaly replaced the interior of my 86 trooper TurboD (225K) with the interior from a 91 trooper. The headliner was not changed. The Sun visors must come from an 86 - the newer ones will not work. Also, there was some difference in the way the rear seat was held in place where it attaches to the rear deck. The rear door cards on the 86 did not have speaker holes in them, so, I just installed the newer cards with the speaker covers in place, no speakers. Everything else fit right in. The newer front seat has a height adjustment - nice! 1992 was model change year so any trooper 86 - 91 should have many interchangeable body parts. I gave the junkyard $200 to strip all the interior parts I needed.

Does anyone know... if I have an 86 diesel, does this automatically put me in 86-91 territory for parts, or could some of it be 84-86 still? I looked on the pillar, and the month of manufacture is totally obliterated. Thinking mainly of a new stout bumper for the front and rear...

Tom, I have an 86 Trooper too and since we have the 8 bolt front axle and 10 bolt rear axle I'd pretty much say we are considered 84-86 for parts. The 87-91 Troopers got redesigned in the frame and crossmembers, plus they have 10 bolt front and 12 bolt rear.

87 troopers have the same 8 bolt frt and the 10 bolt rear they are just wider stance and the frt suspension is the the same as the 88 design, the 10 bolt frt and 12 bolt rear was produced after sept 87 as an 88 although an 88 12 bolt will bolt right in and will hook right up with a litle effort ,one word of caution on the of chance you ever run up on an 87 t dsl the rear and frt gears were changed only on that one model to 4.11 instead of the normal 4.56 jerry
