oil/temp gauge recommendations - aftermarket... #696516 02/14/06 07:02 AM

I'm looking to buy one of Mosk's gauge pillars, which I'll put an oil pressure gauge and a temp gauge in... Does anyone have a brand that they'd recommend? I don't want to spend a ton of money, but want a quality gauge... Any ideas for the third gauge? Vacuum gauge? When installing an aftermarket temp gauge, where do you put the sensor? Do you replace one of the existing ones, or do you have to drill and tap a new hole? I'd like to leave the factory ones alone, because I'm not sure how much of the smog parts are triggered from the temp gauge...

autometer makes some nice units, and as for the temp gauge, i think that most 22Rs have at least one plugged bung on the intake manfold that you could stick another sender in.

Ditto on the autometer gauges, and yes, the 22Rs do have a plugged bung, should be directly below your t-stat housing on the passanger side of the motor.

My intake manifold that I have installed actually doesn't have that plugged bung beneath the thermostat... there is nothing there but the cast manifold. I do have two other spare intakes which have that bung... One of the intakes has a BVSV in that location, which apparently operates the vacuum advance in some sort of way... something about when the temp heats up, the advance kicks in...

One more decision - digital or analog gauge? What does everyone prefer?

I like analog, easier to see while driving, I think.....

The BVSV directs vacuum when it heats up, got some sort of metal valve dealie in there that's heat sensative.....

I think that the temperature sender is only for the dash meter. The other temperature sensor in the front of the engine provides the signal for computer, i.e. cold idle etc. This is on my '92, maybe the same on your '84

Definately prefer Analog, can't stand digital gauges. As for manufacturer, probably have to go with Autometer, I have some Mallory gauges that I bought years ago and had in my 67 LeMans, but I don't think they make gauges anymore.
