got 89 trooper with the 2.6L 4cyl and thinking about taking OEM fan off and just runninf electric fans. Any psoblems with this and will it help it run cooler? And what about horse power any increase? Thanks in advance Mark

I have also been pondering this switch on my 2000 trooper.
You should'nt have any problems as long as you have a decent size electric fan. Any time you remove something that is causing drag on your engine ( Like Cooling fan,water pump, or Power seeering pump) you sould see a minor improvement in HP and MPG. Jegs sells electric fans that are thermasticaly controled, and some that you can control, so the level of cooling would be up to you.
P.S. Make sure you get the right type Pusher or Puller

was thinking of taking off the ac condenser and putting a puller and a pusher fan. I dont need ac, its just for off road and not a daily driver... Mark

You are not going to see a noticeable HP gain if your stock fan clutch is operating correctly, as the electric fan takes power from the alternator which is still driven by the engine. It is generally regarded as inneficient to use two fans, as one is going to restrict the other. (ALthough second gen autos use two <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />..., I thinnk one is for the AC condenser and trans cooler) Do you have cooling problems now? Do you need you engine to run cooler? I would look at obvious things like fan clutch operation , thermostat, gunk in cooling passages and or radiator and corroded radiator fins. I am not bagging on the electric fans I just don't think they are all that great a deal.

From my understanding Sirs, running an electric fan will load the engine via the alternator but not nearly as much as the engine driven fan. Even @ high amperage. Muscle car owners have been installing electric fans and water pumps to reduce HP loss for quite some time with decent results. Plus they can switch them off if someone wants to step up at a stoplight. But I would suggest setting your fan up for infinite speed if that is something you want to pursue. That way the sensor will modulate the fan motor to whatever speed that is needed.

You will gain some HP and MPG with an electric fan. While its true that putting a load on the alternator will decrease it, when you are moving (above around 30 mph I believe) you are pushing enough air through the radiator that the fan is not needed and should not be running. Even with a perfectly functioning fan clutch there will alway be some drag from the mechanical fan.
Either mercades or bmw (I forget which) is using electric power steering pumps for the same reason now. While driving straight you dont need the pump running and creating a load on the engine so its turned off. When you start to turn the wheel it turns the pump on.

Yeah but an offroading rig doesn't see the same benefits of a luxury cruiser or drag racer since we do so much traveling at low speed. My truck is very slow actually it only moves a few inches per month. Taurus fans are cool though I'm going to end up installing one so again I'm not all against the idea.
Also I think there is something to be said for the diffference in the fan itself mechanical vs electric. Mech fans tend to be more rotating mass, than electric seing as they are more of an efficient fan design. i would also make teh assumption that per revolution more air is moved via the typical elctric than the typcial mechanical which is another point in the electric's favor.

If it is running hot, look at the radiator first, 17 years of crude in the radiator. Clean it or replace it. Put all the fans you can fit under the hood, it will still run hot <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/evil.gif" alt="" /> with a plugged up radiator.
