On my 100th inspection of this carburetor I noticed that there appeared to be a plate missing from the drivers side. Upon consulting the FSM I confirmed that there should be a plate and a couple of other pieces. My question is what is this and what is it's function?

This carb has run rich as hell (16mpg) since I got the truck but I've been dealing with vacuum leaks, EGR valves, clogged CAT/muffler, and loose plugs in the head just to name a few. Timing appeared to be at 2? last night but I was tired so I'll recheck it today. The plugs are gapped at 0.041in for some reason. I'm wondering if someone is trying to compensate for other problems by running the plugs hotter instead of fixing the real issue. I'm also checking the coil today. If everything else checks out I'm going to need some help in pinpointing the problem with the carb.

I beleive only '84 and prior carbs have that plate you are referring to. Forget what it was for, but I've ran three carbs in the past two years and the only one that gave me issues had that plate

16mpg? Thats about average for me in the three warmer seasons.. I'd love to get that in the winter. I have stock gears and 33x12.5's. If your lifted, I'd say thats about right, if your stock, then thats probably a few mpg's low.

Well maybe someone knew something I don't about that little plate. But the truck is all stock. No lift or different gears. And remember, we don't really have "winter" down here.

i think you should be getting better than 16 mpg in florida even when its winter. currently im getting 19.5 mpg almost consistently w/ half city driving and half highway driving. on straight highway i get about 24.5 mpg. i have 33's and 4.88 gears. i also have a carb.

Look where that plate would go, without getting yourself hurt, put your finger in the little hole where that plate would go. If you feel vaccumm, you have a problem. 99% likely that it is plugged.

I've worked on many many carb. The only one that gave me alot of grief was one with that plate installed.

I believe that device you have circled is what they call an over-run valve.

It leans the mixture by introducing air into the mix when the engine is decelerating with some load, like going down a grade still in gear with your foot of the gas pedal.

I believe they abandoned that idea on later carbs of the same model, they just left the casting boss on the side of the carb un-machined.

Just check to see if there is an open hole inside, if it's one that was abandoned it will be blank.

Thanks for the info guys!

Well looking at it last night it had threaded screw holes and what looked to be a functioning hole/port. I didn't see if it was drawing vacuum. I just sealed it up for now.

I did however re-time the motor back down 2-3? to stock. That seemed to have made a big improvement all around. Drives better and doesn't appear to be running near as rich.(My eyes aren't burning in the garage anymore! )

Last question(s): Why would someone have the spark plug gap set at 0.041in? Is anyone else running that hot of a gap on a stock motor?

By opening the gap you force the ignition coil to build a higher voltage potential and the larger gap between the center electrode and the ground bar allow better access to the air fuel charge.

Only works on high end ignition systems where the coil has a greater energy potential.

you may want to try going back to the factory recommend gap and see if that helps any. probably won't have much effect.

That's what I was thinking. It still has the stock coil and as far as I know the stock cam and heads. But I don't have much history on this thing so who knows why they did what they did?

I'll re-gap and see what a difference that makes. So far all of my changes have had good results.
