Does anyone run MSD ignition system in their truck? I know you can tell a difference in some vehicles, I'm wondering if it will change my 3.0.

I know they work well in the older Chevys that have the first gen HEI. But I think the stock toyota ignition is hard to improve on! I have the Jacobs it's a total wast of money!!

I thought the ignition was just for better startups and a crisper throttle response. I wasn't expecting quarter mile differences. Would be nice though.

I run one on my 22RTE turbo truck, and I find it makes for a smoother idle and reliable performance -- I'm running 16 psi of boost and I never misfire, so I am very happy with their stuff. I've run MSD components for ~25 years, basically since high school, and I've found they work as advertised. Now, that being said, I don't think you'll see a lot of difference in the way your 3.0 behaves. If you were running higher compression pistons or a turbo, and had to fight higher pressures in the cylinder, then it can make a HUGE difference, but on a stock motor the cost probably doesn't justify making this change.
My .02 cents,
Jeff

I ran one on my '90 3.0 back in '94, the MSD cpu didn't interface well with the oem cpu. First the tach stopped working, than the engine would cut off while running. I sold the set-up to a friend for his '86 22r and it worked as claimed. I switched to the Jacob's unit in '95 and haven't had any problems with it and the oem cpu. I don't know what the 1/4 mile time is between the Jacob's and stock, but I do get about 2 mpg's better, better throttle response and lower emissions using the Jacob's than w/o. If the MSD is still not a direct plug in(like it was), I would go with the Jacob's unit, no cutting or splicing needed, and if a component fails it is easy to hook the oem back up.
More than tread lightly. Leave it like you were never there, nor anyone else. '90 X-cab 4.88's 33 BFG AT's, rr ARB, Headers, Ignition upgrade, cold air induction. '91 X-cab 5.29's 315's BFG MT's, rr ARB, custom bumper and flatbed

On the later EFI models you have to keep the OEM igniter and interface the MSD box to the system with a tech/EFI adapter.
That's what my buddy did to his 88 and it's worked flawlessly since.
Because the EFI computer needs a specific signal from the OEM igniter to set the timing and trigger the injectors, which the MSD alone can't do.
I don't know if any gains will be noticeable with the stock engine.
The MSD and alike are usually intended for modified/high compression engines.
The only thing you can say about having the MSD system on a stock engine would be your providing more than enough spark energy to ignite the air/fuel charge.
