Help with EFI or Fuel pump? #700339 02/25/06 04:52 AM

My 1999 Montero Sport died yesterday as I was pulling into a parking stall. Ever since it does not idle. It runs great except when stopped with it in gear. Today the check engine light came on.

Can some pleae tell me where to find the connector to check the codes and where can I find a list of what the codes mean?

I have had a high pitched whine coming from the area of the fuel tank. So I am little concerned about the condition of the fuel pump. But I think it is more like Idle Air control sensor??

Please help.

Oh I should probably mention it is a 1999 Montero Sport XLS V6 3.0 120K miles

I agree with you on the IAC. Mine acted the same way when the IAC went bad. Would not idle unless it was warm. It ran fine on the highway though, just wouldn't idle. Unplugging the IAC made no difference. I use the FAQ here to see how to measure resistence in the IAC and see if it was bad. Seach in there for IAC. There are several good write ups on testing with ohm meter.
If fuel pump was bad, it wouldn't run at all. I'm still looking for a new IAC thats not $300 dollars at the dealer. Rock auto dosn't carry the Standard brand,IAC anymore.
I left mine unplugged (electrically) idles slow until it warms up then hits about 700 rpm.
Hope thats all it is.

Thanks !
