Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have been thinking about getting a toyota tundera or a tacoma for a while now. Yesterday i went to the dealer and test drove both of them. It made me really appreiate the Montero. I have a 98 full size and it is drives smooth, has great pick up, and the options are well above what others have. Every time i think i want to get rid of it, i like it more after driving other brands. I hope everyone is injoying their truck as much as i do mine.

I agree. I'm afraid that we'll have to spend some money to replace these big Montero's. About the only thing that's comparable is the Lexus GX 470, quality wise, in my opinion. They are about the same size, a real frame underneath, with the frame rails enclosed, two speed transfer case. Its expensive though, expect to spend $48-$54k new. Best thing is it kinda looks like a Montero with a V8. Which would have been cool if you could have been able to get a montero with a small block V8.
Don't know why mitsubishi went to a unibody, its like they wanted to kill it off. Even nissan realized its unibody mistake and went to putting a real frame under the pathfinders again. They're just stronger with a frame.

Changed the oil in my montero yesterday. Went ahead and put in the new air filter for the year. Runs like a champ.

What type Power steering fluid does everyone use? I thought about changing mine out and put in Valvoline maxlife power steering fluid in it. Is that OK? I havn't yet.
let me know
thanks in advance

Thanks !

Welcome both of you! Glad to have you both with us. If you have a tech question, you're better served to post it in a new thread after you've checked with the search up top to make sure it hasn't been covered already.

For example, if someone doesn't stop to read a general thread called "Montero...great truck", then they won't see a question about power steering fluid, you see what I mean?

To answer your question, I've always used what was spec'ed in the manual, which is the Mitsu auto trans fluid, or the chrysler ATF+.

Again, great to have you both on board!

Hey Thanks Phil !
I really appreciate all the information you guys put up here. I have used it to fine tune my Montero and keep it running.
Diamond ATF+ in the power steering, I wouldn't have thought of that. I will pick the latest available at the dealer tomorrow.
Thanks again. rob

Thanks !

I have a '95 LS and I have the manual right in front of me. Hmmm.. Lets see....

From the Fluid Capacities page:

Power Steering: Capacity. 1.1 Quarts. Type: Automatic transmission fluid "Dexron II"

And for the record;

Automatic Transmission: Capacity: 7.9 Quarts. Type: "Diamond ATF SP", "ATF Dexron II" or equivalent.

Dexron II is no longer availible. It has been replaced with Dexron III and then Dexron IIIh and the latest I believe is Dexron IV. However, most stores just carry Dexron III. This is kind of a sensitive subject around here, but per the Dexron specs, Dexron III is backward compatible with all previous versions of Dexron fluid. I think you can use Dexron III for the power steering fluid or the ATF for '95 and earlier vehicles.
