I heard there was a certian year where the 4runners where best (as in solid axels, something else too) but I cant remember what year it was!

I found an 89 4runner with 70k miles on it with a newly rebuilt 4-cylinder engine, new tires, alternator, starter and battery, for 2000 bucks..just wondering if 89 was a decent year!

70K miles for $2000? Check for accident and flood damage and then buy it asap!

I tried to call him today, but he didnt anwser, and its too late to check it out now..

Unfortunatly I cannot drive stick shift (no one in my family even OWNS a stick shift, and Im only 18, so ive only had one car..) so I cant test drive it..

I saw a picture of a 4 runner with the rear shell thing taken off, do they come off like that or is it some sort of custom job?

BTW, does the fact that the engine is a 4cyl hurt it any?

Driving stick is easy to learn. I even managed to teach my girlfriend.

Taking off the back is easy, they came with detachable tops to avoid an SUV tariff back in the '80s.

The 4 cylinder engine is perfectly fine. They are reliable, easy to work on, and plenty of aftermarket parts easy found.

It sounds like a great rig. Assuming is checks out with the VIN I would snatch it up.

I fabricated my own Bikini Top system. Its a snap.
I'd say '89 is a great year. Inspite of the IFS.

I love the 88,89 SR5 deluxe package but believe me when I say DO NOT GET THE V6!!!
I'm on my 4th blown head gasket (2nd since I've owned it)and man what an expensive repair.
I guess Toyota figured out the problem in the 90's models but the 80's are prone to failure from what I've seen.
