Need a Spot
my 93 SR is blowing a little bit of white smoke (not alot but deffinetly coolant). there's NO over heating. i have one spark plug that looks a little oily, the rest are normal. i find no power loss. i just switched to synthetic oil a month ago (not sure if that means anything) i still have to do a compretion test and leakdown test. can anyone sugest anything or tell me what to look for thanks

Assuming the coolant leak is into the combustion chamber, the bad cylinder will have a very white plug, not oily. Run the truck to warm, let it sit for a couple of hours, and pull accessible plugs, then have someone crank it briefly while watching for water spit out of the plug holes (guard your eyes).

Are you sure its coolant? The synthetic oil could be suspect?

Last variable that changed.

Might be thinnner than what you had, thicker may have been hiding issue.

Auto trans? I am not sure if that trans uses a vacuum controlled modulator but that sounds like the symntoms of a leaking modulator. If it has vacuum line down to trans pull off end at trans and see if tranny fluid pures out. If it does replace modulator and top up trans fluid. Smoke will go away after you stop the supply (eventually)

Synthetic is very thin and slippery, It gets past worn valve seals. Don't put synthetic is a old motor

Viscosity is viscosity. It is true that Mobil 1 oils are on the thin side, but you can always just get something thicker like a 5W40.

I think it is a myth that synthetic oil causes seal leaks.

There is no vacuum connection to the tranny.

If it's a coolant leak, the exhaust smell will be sweet. If it's atf, it smells like atf spilled on the hot exhaust manifold (ASL a fried a/t). Dunno what fried synth smells like. Coolant level drops? Any hard first of the morning cranking (hydrolock)? Any chocolate yoohoo in the oil pan? Any funny smells out of the radiator?
