Need a Spot
am getting Mixed info, on the gap for a 04 Tacoma 2RZ 4 cyl.

I took out 4 NGK ( BKR5EYA ) plugs, they were gapped at .54. I thought that is a very big gap.

I went to the dealer, and brought 4 Toyota plugs ( K16R-U11 ) and had one of the mechs look up the correct gap. He said it

should be .31. The dealer where I got the plugs said they are "Pregapped". The gap on them was .43.

I looked at some more info, and it said, that they should be .43. on my 2RZ 4 cyl. also.

Something isn't right somewhere.

I regapped the new plugs to .31 and installed them. I didn't read all of the above till after I

had set them to .31 and installed them.

And if you have done this, it takes awhile to get all of the air system out of the way and then to put it back.

So, now I am in a Total wonder on what the correct gap should be. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Thanks for any help.

From the online factory manual posted at the top of this forum:

http://misc.mmdsi.net/tacoma/tacoma-manual/Repair_Manual/03tacoma/ig2rzfe3/ignsy/ovi.pdf
Second page, about 1/2 way down.

The gap is listed in your owner's manual...I would use that gap before the 2003 FSM linked above. Just as cross check, do you have the plugs that were taken out, for a reference?

A bit nitpicky, but those measurements in inches are .031, .043, and .054

Mark in AZ Thanks for your reply.

Yes, I have the plugs that were in it. As, I said they were NGK BKR5EYA and the gap was .54. That is what got me checking. I thought "Boy that sure is wide". And after looking and calling the dealer, I was correct. .31 verus .54, "Unreal" <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />
I gapped the new plugs at .31, Toyota # K16R-U11. As I said on the onset. Dealer said that they were "Pregapped", they were gapped at .43 Not .31. Had to regap them.

Thanks

What does your owner's manual say the gap should be?? How many miles on on your truck and what is the plug change interval recomended in the manual?

And (yes, nitpicky...) if you are measuring in inches, I hope you mean .043" and not.43" etc. Just want to make sure you are relaying correct info.

I know when I changed plugs on my 3.4 at 60K, I found that the dealer *forgot* to change them at 30K (don't use that dealer anymore). Anyways, my gaps were huge (2-3 times specs) but that was mostly due to extreme wear from the double service life...

<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" /> Yes it is .043 and .031 in my post.

Boy a gap at .43 and etc, would be a real deal. LOL

It is a 04 2RZ-FE with 27,000 on it. It says change every 30K in the book. It gives NO gap info.

Thanks

I just checked my manual for my 04 3.4 and I couldn't find any gap info either...

Weird! <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

For the 3.4 2001 engine my factory manual calls for .043 or 1.1mm gap on the plugs.

My 99 4Runner Owner's Manual (not the Maintenance schedule) lists the plug gaps in the SPECIFICATIONS section under ENGINE.

Since the 99 4Runner did not come with the 2RZ (2.4), I can not help you on gap, but the 3RZ (2.7) is listed at .031 and the 5VZ (3.4) is .043.

NGK and Denso lists .044 for all 3 engines for the 2004 Tacoma.

Hope this helps.
