I've got two power inverters. One is a small unit which I use for a laptop or to power my christmas lights this past winter.

The other is a bigger unit 1.75"x12"x8" which sits in back mounted to the side of my tool box, is hardwired to the battery (fuse removed) and rarely gets used.

This is the power connection that runs into a relay that is on the ignition panel for on and off of main power. (Sorta like Frank's)

This red switch is the switched power for the unit. So the unit has a heavy power supply when the truck is on althought you can turn the unit on and off with this switch.

Over view of the dash. As you can see this looks factory. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Ohh forgot I sell coleman and vector units (my name brands) and some off brand stuff like pyle and boss. I would like to carry honeywell but there is not much demand for such high powered units.

If you plan to run electronics or smart battery chargers, get a unit that puts out as close to a true sine wave power as possible. Most cheaper inverters put out a square wave, which makes some power supplies very unhappy. My el cheapo radio shack 300w won't run my charger for the Dewalt 18v tools because the square wave freaks out the brain inside the charger. I've heard of the same problem with some laptops.

My yota has one built into the bedwall. Used it twice: sanding bottom paint off the boat and an angle grinder at the junkyard.

Most of the newer small units now use a modified sine wave - not quite a true sinusoidal oscilliscope pattern, but not as blocky as the square wave - more of a clipped, flat-top sine wave. I haven't tried mine on a laptop yet, but it runs an electric drill, fridge, compressor, battery charger, etc. just fine.

You guys all have very nice setups. I'm toying with how to set mine up now, and Frank, I'm thinking along the way you have yours with a small variation.
