Getting the Wheeling Fever
I've done a search in the archives and couldn't turn up anything on this.

Generation 2 Trooper, the passenger side shoulder belts, front and rear, have taken to tighening up while driving down the road. Passengers can't lean forward at all. One person, rather on the overweight side, claims the belt gets tighter with each breath expelled, preventing future intake of breath.

I'm starting to get some pretty bad remarks from passengers!

Any clues as what to do?

This must be a common thing with 2nd gens. My rodeo does the same. The wife is always taking the belt off and then back on just to get the tension to release. I thought the guys at the audio shop messed it up when they removed the pillar cover. I know there was a post a while back where the belts were not retracting after use. I don't think that is related to what we are experiencing, but you never know. Hope some can remedy this as I am one of those overweight pupils that get choked out when I sit in the passenger seat.

it sounds like your passengers are pulling the belt out too far. Some people, especially overweight people, tend to pull the belt all the way out before buckling it. Problem is when you pull all the way out it engages the ratcheting mechanism. This is NOT a flaw or problem its supposed to work that way for use with child seats. Simply tell your friends to stop pullin the belt so far out, and slide the seat back more.

My 94 does that in the back seat. I'll have to try it in the 2001. I've ridden in the back of the 94 and it is quite annoying. The book for the 2001 says that if you pull the belt ALL the way out it will then ratchet down until you let it all the way in. It is for child seats.

Maybe cycle yours all the way in and out and see if the cam in there lets up.

I'll try that not pulling the belt all the way out thing!

I've been able to stop the complaining by simply attaching a little clamp to the the belt at the top when the belt was properly located for the particular person (recommended by the local Isuzu dealer as the factory fix), to keep the belt from further retracting. But, people keep losing the clamp.

Dallas..... Do you have a way of sliding the rear seat back? My 2000 is missing that feature.

Saw this posted on Ebay, they went for around $15 with shipping. Maybe a dealer can get them? Should help with the ratchet problem that a lot of robust people seem to have from over extending.
