cats and O2 sensors #703988 03/08/06 01:57 AM

hello all,

Today I had both catalytic converters replaced, the "Y" pipe and all four O2 sensors. I got a great deal on all that stuff on ebay.

Anyway, on to my questions and ponderings.

On Thanksging while driving home from doing the family thing, my CEL went on. It was P0420. Basically telling me my catalytic converter on my passenger side was not operating properly (either that or it could have been the (O2 sensor). Fastforward to today, I replaced it all.

I asked to save the old O2's as they were probably still good, one is only a year old. One thing I noticed was that the O2 sensor from the passenger side located after the cat was covered in carbon. Compared to the other three, it was nasty.

here it is:

here it the sensor from the passenger side before the cat

here are all four (LF, LR, RF, RR)

As you can tell, the one from the rear on the passenger side is filthy, the front from the same side is slightly more dirty compared to its counterpart on the other side.

My questions are:

Is it probable that it was just the O2 sensor?

Is it likely that this is due to the oil burning issue?

Is there anything else that this says to any of you?

Is there anyway to test the sensors to see if they still work? I am sure the other three are fine, I am going to save them for a rainy day.

My knowledge on this is limited, but I am going to assume that the cat was toast due to the look of the sensor.

Thanks for all the info,
marc

Another question: do you think my gas mileage will increase? It has been horrible for a long time.

When I had the work done they didn't reset the CEL ( they would have charged me). So today I unplugged the battery and when I started the car the CEL immediately came back on.

The code is P0134, no activity from the front sensor on the passenger side.

How can this be, my sensor is newish. What could possibly be wrong?

Any help would be appreciated,
marc

One thing I forgot. I unplugged the battery to reset the CEL, but the guy at AutoZone said this will not do it. He said I need to do 40 start/stop cycles. I thought the battery trick would do it. I also don't know if this code was present before I had the work done. the last time I had the codes read it was in late november. This one may have popped up, but if that's the case, why wasn't the other code still present?

My feeling is that something's awry.

does anybody know if my 99 rodeo 4x4 v6 and a 2001 2wd 3.2 passport would use the same O2 sensors.

I looked at auto parts warehouse online and there were a few that went across the board, but there were several listed for each that wasn't listed for the other.

The reason I ask is I got the 4 sensors from the above mentioned passport.
