Finally had decent enough weather to get some photos of the '88 Supra engine bay.

A keen eye might notice an HKS and Porsche 996 turbo blow off valves run in tandem, Lexus V8 airflow meter, Aeromotive adjustable fuel pressure regulator and a Fluidyne aluminum radiator.

It looks bad but it's actually pretty easy to work on.

I made some changes to the blowoff valve and was hoping to get its cool new sound on video, but there's too much noise to really hear it. You can however see my custom, stock-looking 30 psi boost gauge in action:

What is the point of the dual BOVs Ken? One to recirculate the air and the other for the sound? Venting to the atmosphere doesn't make the AFM very happy on my turbo truck. The BOV on my car is quiet (stock 1G DSM) but come on Ken you don't need the sound for people to know that it is fast.

Hiker--talk about clean and simple, wow! What is the output?

Harry, the HKS BOV and the hardpipe section was free so I threw it on there. That particular section of intercooler pipe that it replaced is a necked-down plastic piece and is restrictive.

The Bosch valve recirculates air at lower boost levels (below about 7 psi) and then the HKS starts working. I did hollow-out the HKS so it doesn't whistle; it simply makes an air release sound. I have never had a stalling problem using both valves--I could feel a slight drop in power after shifting with just the HKS and I would blow the Bosch one if I ran it by itself.

Remind me again how you get/keep the engine bay so CLEAN? I had read it in another post somewhere, but I'm just amazed that an 18 year old engine bay can look that good, especially with as much stuff is jammed in there and considering what it was when you got it.

The engine bay stays clean because it doesn't have any leaks, but on occasion I bomb the engine bay with "303 Aerospace Protectant" to protect the hoses and make it look nice. (Think Armor All, but 303 protects rather than destroys.)

I hate how busy my engine bay is; it has to be that way so I can pass California smog checks. If it weren't for the visual test I could really clean things up by eliminating the Toyota airflow meter and going with a map sensor (MAFT-Pro), and going with a forward-facing intake like the twin turbo Supras have. (Refer to the pics below.) The car would run even cleaner with these modifications and servicability is much easier. Don't get me wrong, smog laws are extremely important to have--my opinion is they should drop the visual test and rely solely on the sniffer test. If it passes the sniffer, you should pass smog.

Ken... It pumps about 320hp out of a beefed 289ci. The pic attached is an old pic before I really detailed the engine compartment out. I'll try to update... and since it's a 1965... No smog required..YEA....lol

Bet you can't have your engine out in 15mins My Supra engine is really easy to work on right now too, it's sitting on the floor in the garage

Ken,
What kind of power are you cranking out with the 15psi or so boost with your current setup?

Dan

The last time the car was on the dyno it was 105 degrees outside and it was still on the stock turbo running 10-11 pounds of boost. It made 296 rear wheel hp and 342 ft lbs of torque. Using 18.5% drivetrain loss, that is 350 hp and 405 ft lbs at the crank. You've probably seen it already, but here's the 858KB video of my dyno session.

Since that time I rebuilt the motor, upgraded the turbo from a "46-trim" to a "60-trim," and made a few other changes like a complete fuel system/injector upgrade. It should make 70+ hp more with this setup and 15-16 pounds of boost; so I would estimate approximately 420-425 hp and just under 500 ft lbs of torque in its current state.

My limiting factor at this point is the puny stock intercooler and the rubber intercooler pipes. I plan on upgrading those this summer and will throw the car on the dyno once these final modifications are complete.

Come to California and we'll go for a spin.
