Getting the Wheeling Fever
4WD went out today in my 90 montero and thought my auto hubs were to blame. Upon futher examination it appears that my front drive shaft is not turning. What engages the front drive when 4 lo/high is selected on the Tcase? Solonoid, gears, chain, or something else? Nothing appears to be out of place or broken. Where do I start looking for the problem?

Okay, went out and crawled under the montero and wiggled some wires on the back of the Tcase and tried to twist the front drive shaft to check for play. I have 4WD again. Is this coincidence or could something be loose?

I'd bet the chain is broken. Just from what I've experienced.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
4WD working this morning to get out of the drive. Once on the main road disengaged 4WD. The following noises and vibrations all occured while in 2WD. Noticed a new vibration at about 40-50 mph. Down around 20-30 mph noticed a whine like the 4WD is still engaged. This noise continues to about 5-10 mph and then stops followed by a "clunk". Sounds like its still in 4WD, but Tcase selector says 2WD. Drives like its in 2WD.

Pulled up to a snowbank in 4 Lo and truck in gear. Left truck running and got out. Rear wheel spinning, front drive nothing. As mentioned earlier, wiggled wires on back of the Tcase and tried to hand turn the drive shaft. Tried 4WD again and everything worked. At least till this morning.
