Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hahaha... I swear, if it ain't one thing, it's 3 others.

I replaced my u-joints and they're doing fine. I really need to post a picture of the worn one. It's a beauty... about half of each cylinder inside the caps is still there.

Anyways, so I had been smelling gas more in the past couple days, and it had been seeping into the house through the vents from the garage. Last night I decide to move it outside because it was getting to be too much, when I noticed a small pool of gas under the tank. I can just about guarantee the tank has a hole, and it's leaking from ALL over the tank guard (since the guard is like a sponge from being rotted through with rust, and now it's sopping with gas).

So I obviously need a replacement, but I've been looking around at parts and I'm not getting a clear picture of what needs what.

Here are my questions:

1. If I replace the metal 15 gal with a plastic 15 gal, are there going to be any 'fitting problems' with the standard tank guard? Any special parts, straps, etc?

2. If I replace it with a 21 gal OMIX plastic, other than needing a 20 gal tank guard, straps, and sender, are there any other considerations? Will it stick out real far underneath?

3. Are there any other parts that I'll likely need to replace regardless of tank size? I have been having problems starting in the morning due to the fuel lines kinda emptying themselves overnight.

and 4. Any overall recommendations for this project?

First thing to do is to find out zackly WHAT is leaking.. You describe a leaking hose pretty good.. If the tank only has a small space that is leaking I would consider glassing the spot..
If you just MUST have another tank look around for a good used plastic one of the same size.
To go to a larger tank requires a different guard/pan underneath the tank...they are not the same. You will also need a different pump/semder in the larger one.

First off check your lines. Some of those 24 year old lines will dry rot on you. So it could be a return line. Then in terms of the tank you want to check your skid plate for rust/decay and that whole thing. If its bad you might want to look at replacing it. Then in terms of the plastic ONIX gas tank i remember that if you went with a 20 gallon you might be able to find extended straps to work with your 15 gallon skid plate. But if your plates already ruined you might be able to swap it over to a 20 with a little work.

Well, knowing that the (most likely OMIX) plastic tank will fit in a stock skid plate is good info.

I kinda checked around my jeep last night and couldn't tell where it's coming from, so I can't tell ya any more on that. I'll pull it apart this weekend and figure it out.

As for the condition of the skid plate... hahahaha. Sorry, laughing so I don't cry. It's rotted so badly that I can stick my finger through any part of it.

That's one of the reasons I was looking at a whole replacement, but I guess if a hose can get me by for another week or two, that'll help.

I'm leaning towards sticking with a 15 gallon now. I don't know if I want to take the chance on it sticking down too far.

My Cj's tank is a 20 gal. It's not a problem but I hardly ever see rocks and I have about 5" of lift. Look at a YJ, the tank sticks down as much on them as a CJ with a 20 gal tank.
