Less than a month ago, I ditched my 31x10.50R15 Pro Comp Mud Terrains for some 265/70R15 Dunlop Radial Rover All Terrains. Here in the last year, I've pretty much been driving my truck 99% on the road, and these Pro Comps would not stay balanced for longer than a month or two after the fact. Plus they got noisier and noisier as they wore, and caused a lot of vibration that made me think other things were going wrong (like brakes or wheel bearings). I've been in several vehicles with mud tires on them, and never heard what I heard in my truck with these tires. So, all that to say, I wanted something quieter and that had better road manners, but still had some off road capability should I need it. *And* I didn't want to spend the money on the BFG AT tires.

I ordered this particular size from Discount Tire Company and got them installed about a week later. The difference in road manners is phenomenal. All those groans and vibrations are gone.

These Dunlops have excellent rain performance so far-- I never feel like I'm losing control or that I'm going to break a tire loose. They exhibit a slight bit of road noise, but it's hardly noticeable. I can actually have a conversation with a passenger at highway speeds now-- and 75mph doesn't feel so dangerous anymore. I'm not as impressed with the cornering capability of these tires. They are actually a little worse than the Pro Comp MTs in that respect. I'm betting that the Pro Comps have a stiffer sidewall than the Dunlops.

All in all, I'm very happy with my new shoes so far. They are only slightly shorter (just over 1/2") than the 31s they replaced, so acceleration is about the same. I just ran through my first full tank of gas with them, and will have to post a mileage comparison later.

I have yet to take them off pavement.

I did a lot of searching, and didn't find too much on these tires here at the Wire, thus the reason for the lengthy post. On a side note, I just went to look at Dunlop's website, and they don't show this size on their spec sheets anymore. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Mileage report:

So far I'm averaging about 2 mpg better with the new tires. I was averaging between 20-21mpg before and now am averaging between 22-23mpg. Both of these numbers are corrected for the difference in tire size from stock. The gain in mpg is mostly due to the slight reduction in size of the tire. However, my mud tires were so worn (nearly bald on the back) that they were actually a bit smaller than my new tires. So I think my old average was probably a bit worse (maybe 1-2mpg) than I had calculated because I was basing it on the original size of the tires-- not the well-worn size. So really, I have gained a good bit. I'm wondering if there is a large difference in rolling resistance based on the tread design between a mud tire and an all terrain tire, or if my gain is just mainly due to the reduction in section width (and thus the amount of tire in contact with the road)?

I've had a set of these for about 60k miles. They are starting to get worn. I swap them out for BFG ATs in the winter or off-road duty.

The rain performance is quite good. But off-road in mud or in snow they are not so hot.

I used mine for 99% road driving and can't really complain.
