WhatsUp MontRaiders, I am looking at changing the rear main on my 90 Montero 3.0 4wd and I am wondering if this can be done with just a floor jack to remove and re-install the trannie. I want to do it myself I am just not sure if the trans can be stable on a floor jack to re-install and how heavy the trans is, or if the transfer case can be removed from the trannie, possibly? I don't want to drop the trannie and not be able to get it back in, so any help is grealty appreciated. Thanks, Garrett.

Yes, and do a search on "ratchet straps" and "tranny" and you'll find some info. Easier to remove the tcase first, I think. Sometimes you can find tranny cradle adapters for floor jacks, too.

Believe me when I say that the tranny is heavy, I just did a clutch job on my 88 and uffff I am still sore. Get a friend of your to give you a hand when taking it down and when installing it back for safety reasons, last thing you want is to have the tranny land in your chest or to pinch a hand.

I sure am glad I work at a shop. I'd never get this kind of stuff done on the ground.
