Getting the Wheeling Fever
yeah while driving i let up off the peddle and i hear a noise from the rear. it sounds like a thumping, like a gas quad at idle.

check the fluid in the dif. and its dark grey(i changed it about 6 months ago) then i checked the t-case and it looks way better.

how much can i get a rebuilt 3rd member for???

Have you eliminated your u-joints/double-cardan or slip yoke as the source of the problem?

When the u-joint was gone on the pinion end of the driveshaft of my old truck, it felt nice and tight while mounted on the truck but made some awful noises (which I thought was the ring and pinion). I pulled the driveshaft off and noticed the u-joint had fallen apart - caps were cracked, needle bearings were gone.

Give everything a good inspection, then a greasing, and pull the DS if you have to.

It's natural for the gear oil to turn dark, remember your rear 3rd is always working but your t-case isn't.

Body Damage is Cool
X2 for the drive shaft or u-joints, my drive shaft ran out of lube in the slip joint and it started making a horrible racket while driving.....lubed it back up and all is happy now <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />
