Getting the Wheeling Fever
1990 Montero 5 spd auto free hubs. Driving in 4 HI, normal highway sounds. When I shift to 2WD, the 4WD does disengage, but sounds like the T-case is in 4 LO. Gears whining, but no grinding. When I get below 5mph, I hear a clunk and everything sounds normal. Put it back in 4WD and everything sounds and works fine

Do you back up for up to 12ft after shifting out of 4WD?

Backing up does not seem to help with the noise. Even though the 4WD disengages, the front drive is still turning.

Body Damage is Cool
Check the oil level on the T-case or just drain it and give it a fresh one. Also did you unlock the hubs?? If you didn't the front driveshaft is turning the FWD part of the t-case wich might explane the noise in 2wd if the chains or bearings are gone bad.

An oil change costs just a few $ and might solve the prob.

The hubs are the auto free type. I'm wondering if they are not disengaging. I had trouble getting them to engage the other day. If I had manual hubs in the locked pos, T-case in 2WD, would I not get the same noise while driving?

If the front propshaft turns when you drive in 2WD they are stuck on and turning the FWD part of the T-case. If the poor thing is a bit worn out it might make a whine if it turns the chains without load from the engine.
