hi all,
my speedo needle does alot of shaking between 5-40 mph. about 8 yrs ago i replaced the speedo cable with a new one. didn't solve anything then so i'm finally trying to track this problem down.
what's invloved in a speedometer head replacement? is it a diy job? are there "calibration" issues i need to know about?

Changing out THAT speedo is very simple.. the gear in the transfer case is what adjusts the speedo.. They come in colors and number of teeth to change the reading of the speedo. Your gear might be sticking or worn or loose or something.. I would take it out and clean it up and try it again before changing the speedo.. bj,
the gear was changed about a year ago... but i'll give it a check. i intend to give the cable a good greasin' also before i do anything w/the speedometer.
but back to the original question: what's invloved in a speedometer head replacement? is it a diy job? are there "calibration" issues i need to know about?

To use a modern term it is "plug and play"... It comes out of the dash clean and is in a sealed "can".. No adjustments can be made..(without jacking the can open..) Yep I have done that too. The only adjustment is the number of teeth on the gear.. It might be the needle is running on 20 year old grease but usually it is the cable or gear that causes the jumping. got to wondering does it matter what type of grease i use on the speedo cable?
graphite based, all-purpose grease or even 3-in-1 oil?

I'd clean the inside case REAL good and then use the grease right out of my grease gun.. Cleaning seems to be more important than the type of grease put back in there the 3n1 oil would be out of the question. Big JIm <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

just an update:
cleaned the inside cable casing and then greased the cable up and, sure enough, needle is rock solid.
