Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
I recently drained the tranny fluid on my Gen I 4-door and refilled with what I thought was the same amount of fluid. While re-filling, I took it up to the upper COLD notch on the dipstick.
Drove the truck, got it hot -- cycled through the gears and put it in park. Checked fluid and it came back out bone dry. Put more fluid in and checked level in the morning. when cold, it's now reading almost to the first HOT notch -- but after running/cycling/park -- still no fluid is showing up on the dipstick.
What's up? Should I totally ignore the COLD reading and keep filling until I see it register when warmed up? When warm, should the fluid level be in the HOT range? I don't seem to remember such a discrepancy between COLD/HOT reading when filled at QuikLube -- is something wrong??
thanks for any advice.

I think you check the fluid level with the engine running and in park. I think the difference is the fluid is pumped up into the torque converter which then lowers the fluid at the dip stick.
