Roll Me Over
Have any of you guys had experience with Shell rotella or Chevron's Delo 400 15W-40 oil? I've been researching oil lately b/c i haven't been "up-to-date". I found out the API added another service rating.. "SM". Reason I'm asking is b/c I'm going to use one of them (probly shell) b/c they're $8/gallon and meet the CI-4+ rating and SL. Trying to save some money... and I don't see any harm if rigs worth TONS of money run shell and delo. Getting tired of paying $5/qt for mobil 1. That and the mobil 1 "extended performance" only meets SL/CF. the regular mobil 1 meets SM/SL/CF. now.. if I can get some shell or delo for a lot cheaper and meet higher specs... why the heck not, right. I live in FL, so the cold pouring is not an issue. 40F on the coldest days only for hours. I've been searching around and A LOT!!, i mean a lot!! of Proffesional "real truck" mechanics.. ie Freightliner, mack etc all say Delo and Shell are GREAT oil and they recomend them for gas and diesel motors.
$5/qt oil meets CF... $2/qt oil meets CI-4+. What do you guys think? I've been a die hard "synthetics are better" type guy, but you really have to wonder what kind of crack you're doing when paying $5/qt and the guys driving rigs worth more than my house use shell. that and I found some literature on the web accusing Amsoil of being a "pyramid" scam. that came off a Mercedez Benz Forum from some prefered customers. they said they got oil, and offers for vitamins and coffee mugs 1 guy swears it's Amway, a pyramid scam from back in the day.

I've run a variety of those type oils over the year, Delvac 1300, Delo 400, Rotella T, etc. They all work fine, as long as they have both a C (diesel) and S (gas) engine rating.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Mobil 1 EP now meets gf-4, sm requirements. there's still some sl in the stores but if you look hard for the new bottles you'll see it's rated sm.

I am not a synthetic kind of guy.I have a 92 4x2 with 249k that I bought with 12k and has never had synthetic and runs great. My 4runner has 260k plus without synthetic and I just gave my Mom my 90 LS400 with 270k thats never had synthetic as I got an 05 IS300.I would run it in my trannys and diffs but really don't see the need to spend the extra money for the engine.I just change my oil and filter.

I use synthetic in my civic and it's nice to see the oil come out at as clean as it goes in... Makes me feel like it's doing better than "conventional" oil?!?

I use Delo 400 15/40 in the 85 and Mobil1 10/30 in the 91. both work well.

22RE will run good on most any oil, its a very overbuilt engine and oils make little differents. keep it
changed and full and you'll get 300,000~500,000. miles.

The "conventional" oil in my 99 4Runner with 146K miles comes out (almost) as clean as it goes in with 6K mile oil changes...

Wow! Thats awesome! When I used conventional it would always come out dark, maybe it was because I ran the crud out of it... typical? hah oh well it was fun...

well I think I read somewhere that the new SM requirements suck. Why? b/c the EPA or something are tightening up restrictions so oil additives are suffering. that's why you don't see any SM/CI-4+ oil. you see SM/CF or SL/CI-4+. Mobil 1 costs me $4/qt. shell rotella costs me $1.60qt b/c of where I work. So I think I'll go with the higher rated commerical oil that's less than half the cost of mobil 1. And the diesel oil has some serious ANTI-FOAMING properties compare to regular gasoline only oil.

What does the owners manual say for oil change intervals on the 3.0?
