Getting the Wheeling Fever

Hello all. My girl has a 94 4X4 ex cab pickup with a 5 speed. We have 28" BFGs on it with roll and nerf bars. I have a flow master muffler and pipes from the hi Pro cat back. I have a 4" procomp suspension lift ready to bolt on but I was looking to get some more from the little 4 speed before we lift it. We just won a stock turbo setup on Ebay for $450 shipped! Yeeee haaaa! Does anyone know a good outfit for rebuilding the turbo or a good kit to DIY ? Also, Im looking for a good motor kit with turbo pistons. I found one from LC for $750 but Im looking to go as cheap as possible. Also where can I get a good head built to make the most of this turbo rig? I have read a tight 22 RE is good for 110 HP? What can I expect from the stock (5psi) turbo boost? I am also told the stock ECU will work. is this ture? Im having a real hard time finding a used 22 RE to build up so I dont have to down the daily driver truck while I build up the motor, why are these motors so hard to find? Im a 5.0 mustang guy so maybe Im spoiled by the aftermarket and low price stuff available...

So you want to turbo the 22RE in your girlfriends rig? What did the "stock turbo setup" include? You will need the injectors, AFM, exhaust manifold, and ECU at a minimum. If the head on her rig is in good shape and you want to save money, just reuse it. Otherwise DOA Racing Engines or Engnbldr can supply you with a better flowing head (or other parts for that matter). These motors aren't as common as 5.0L motors, nor is modifying them, so expect to pay higher prices for parts even though they use half as many heads, pistons, rods, etc.

The setup includes the charger, intake manifold, upper and lower, throttel body, crossover intake tube, oil and coolant lines, exhaust manifold, sensors, but no ECU. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=8041084819&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWN%3AIT I wish I could just drop a 5.0 in it as I have an extra one on hand, but in Pa we have to meet the emissions laws for the VIN so I can really only make the motor more efficent.

Welcome Jason. Check this site out as it's a WEALTH of info on these motors but first get a hold of the seller and try to find that/an ECU, it's the key to it all. Or beter yet see where the whole motor went/is. Good luck. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

Sinder, awesome page, I will delve into it in the next few days. Ill look for that ECU assuming that the stock 22 RE box will not work? The seller had this setup and an LC short block but we did not have the scratch for the short block even though it was a great price. are aftermarket ECUs available for under $500? I know my laptop can run the 5.0 for $350.

Im looking to go as cheap as possible. Honestly, this is not a good way to begin a turbo project. I have read a tight 22 RE is good for 110 HP? What can I expect from the stock (5psi) turbo boost? i think the accepted factory figures for flywheel hp are: 22R: 96 hp 22RE: 116 hp 22RTE: 136 hp I am also told the stock ECU will work. is this ture? As has been mentioned, you need the turbo injectors, ECU, and AFM. are aftermarket ECUs available for under $500? I know my laptop can run the 5.0 for $350. The only aftermarket ECU in that price range would be the MegaSquirt, which is a DIY-standalone system. Great system, but not plug-and-play for the RTE, as you need to swap over to GM sensors. There are a few guys running MegaSquirt systems on the 22RTE mailing list, so you may be able to find some tuning maps to get you started, but this is the sort of system that requires a lot of "initiative" from the user, and apart from the user community you will be on your own. From my own experience (I'm the guy with the turbo site mentioend earlier in the thread), I would suggest sticking with the stock EFI components and modest boost (less than 8 psi), especially if you are on a budget. The turbo motor can make a fair amount of power, but it lasts a lot longer if you overbuild the [censored] out of it -- forged pistons, quality gaskets, head studs, balance/blueprint, etc. Or stated another way: it is easier to make power than keep this motor healthy and happy, especially if you've increased the boost. My simple advice would be to do a quality rebuild and install a complete 3" exhaust, including either a 3" or 2.5" downpipe. Bruce Hawkins makes a 2.5" downpipe for the stock CT-20. This + a 3" cat and cat-back exhaust will do wonders for this motor's performance. increase the boost to 8 psi and you will be able to have fun and stay fairly reliable. Once you venture above 9 or so psi you will be pushing the limits of the stock injectors, and this is where things get expensive. Anyway, that's my .02 cents... -Jeff

Thanks for the replies guys. 4W1 PM sent. Mosk, thanks for the info and the site. I will keep the setup as stock more or less for now. I do want to build the bottom end strong since I consider this littel motor a stroker. What say you about the LC rebuild kit with LC turbo pistons? Ill start to bump the exhaust size up if I notice a big improvement over an open pipe. I have plenty of 3" stuff laying around from Mustang projects including flow master mufflers. I know alot of turbo guys dont run mufflers since the charger difuses much of the sound. What is your take on that? Most motors need back pressue but the turbo should maintian than from the charger bcak no? I will work to find a Yota ECU. Any idea what they cost fron the dealer or if they are available?
