Are these cracks in head OK? #710352 03/27/06 06:10 AM

Hi All--

I am working on a turbo C223T I bought on the Isuzu P'up forum and have found some cracks in the combustion chambers. Are the cracks between the valve seats probable to leak coolant into the cylinder? And, are the cracks in the precombustion chamber a problem?

I have seen both of these kinds of cracks before on engines that did not seem to have any problem with them. But, this engine has some minor rust in one cylinder and I am in need of counsel.

Thanks--

Paul

HEY PAUL THE CRACK IN THE HOT PLUG WILL NOT CAUSE A RUNNING PROBLEM UNLESS YOU CAN SHINE A LIGHT AN SEE THRU THE CRACK , FACTORY TOLEARENCE IS 3/4 INCH LONG, AS LONG AS IT IS NOT ALL THE WAY THRU, THE PROBLEM WITH THSES PLUGS IS THEY ARE SO HARD IF IT SHOULD DEVELOP ANOTHER CRACK CLOSE BY THIS ONE IT COULD POSSIABLY BREAK OF THE PIECE IN BETWEEN AND IT WOULD MOST LIKELY END UP IN THE TOP OF A PISTON, NOT GOOD , THE CRACK BETWEEN THE VLVS , CAN BE REPAIRED BY A GOOD MACHINE SHOP BY DRILLING AND PLUGGING,IF THE PLUGS HAVE TO BE REPLACED, HOWEVER I HAVE SEEN THESE ENGS WITH A TONS OF MILES ON THEM AND THE CRACK BETWEEN THE VLVS DOESN,T SEEM TO HURT THEM , HAVE NEVER SEEN ONE CRACK ALL THE WAY THRU TO WTR JACKET , BUT ON A MAJOR REBUILD I WOULD GO AHEAD AND FIX THEM, THOSE HOT PLUG HAVE TO BE GROUND FLAT AFTER THEY ARE REPLACED, SO THAT THEY WILL NOT CUT INTO THE HEAD GASKET , THEY CANNOT BE MILLED , THEY ARE TOO HARD JERRY

Guys--

Thanks, for the info.

Jerry--

The plugging repair is good news. Do you have any additional info on this? Is there a kit or a service bulletin?

Paul

HI PAUL MOST ANY MACHINE SHOP SHOULD BE ABLE TO PLUG THE CRACKS BETWEEN THE VLVS ,,WHAT THEY DO IS DRILL A SMALL HOLE ALL THE WAY THRU THe crack IN THIS CASE IT LOOK LIKE A 1/8 INCH WOULD DO IT , THEN THE HOLES IS TAPPED AND A PLUG IS SCREWED IN ,IT IS ACTUALLY A TAPERED THREAD , AND THEN THE PLUG IS BROKEN OF FLUSH, THE NEXT STEP IS TO DRILL ANOTHER HOLEUSING HALF OF THE PLUG JUST INSTALLED AND SO ON ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE CRACK, WHEN IT IS DONE IT ACTUALLY LOOKS LIKE IT HAS BEEN STITCHED AND IT WON,T EVER LEAK, DOESN,T TAKE AS LONG AS IT SOUNDS , AS THE TOOLS ARE MADE ESP FOR THIS AND IT CAN SAVE A VEYR EXP HEAD OR BLOCK, MOST ANYTHING MADE OF CAST IRON CAN BE DONE THIS WAY . JERRY

Jerry--

Extremely very cool repair. I am pretty good with my machine tools. Can you tell who sells these plugs? I might try it myself if I can find the right stuff.

Thanks a bunch--

Paul

Thanks for the repair shop info. I am on the west coast though and probably will not want to send my head to NY.
