Well Fox graciously came over last night and amazed me with his speed and proficiency. What he did in a matter of hours would have taken me days. I just basically stood out of his way. We decided to forego the compression test and remove the passenger side valve cover to try to see what the source of the noise was. Unfortunately, the valvetrain looked good. The only thing we did not do while the valve cover was off was to reconnect the coolant and fuel lines and run the engine without the valve cover. While the engine was turning over, it did not make any sounds. Only when it revs past 1000 rpm does it make the meganoise. So while it could have been the valvetrain, we guessed that it was something down lower.
Well since Fox was over for about six plus hours and was super excited about Isuzu's, I decided to sell it to him. He's got visions of learning to rebuild an engine and do a solid axle swap. More power to him. Again thanks to all who have been so helpful and especially to Fox who pretty much gave me a six hour class on auto mechanics. Taro

Taro Well Taro like I was saying--I was that fast cause I just did all of that on the Rodeo. I still wish it could of been something with the Cam, but it wasn't. I got to admit---I've never been that scared of a running engine before!! Knock/Ping was crazy!!! I call you later to see about coming to get her---Weather permitting of course!! BTW--Nashville has been getting some Tornadoes and there headed our way!!

Taro, I just love what you wrote! Real sorry to hear what you and Rodeofox finally diagnosed. Want to thank you for taking the time to share your problems and approaches with everyone. Saddened to hear that you are passing off the Trooper, but equally pleased that it will be going to another Wire member. Hope that you will still be staying in the Isuzu family though. You take care. Jim PS Now I can hardly wait to see Rodeofox's buildup thread for the Trooper!
Isuzu Trooper, '91, 2.8L, 3" PA BL, coil sprung SAS, OX locker front, Detroit back, 5.38 gears... Ruby's got a theme song!!! Sing-a-long

1st thing to do is rebuild the engine---- 2nd thing- make sure the tornadoes heading my way doesn't wipe it out
3rd---Got a friend with a 90 Trooper and it's half way thru the SAS---you know Dana 60--Gm 14 bolt and some small 38s it's gotta get done to make way for the trooper.
Then it's time!!!!

Taro I had hopes of making it a yard ornament for myself guess that fell thru. If Fox needs a low mileage engine(less than 20,000)and if I don't find another project to put it in.

You got a low mileage 3.2l-96-97?? I'm hoping to rebuild it. Thinking it might be the Rod bearings in the no 1 Cylinder making the knock. this is pending the damage is isolated. I wouldn't think it would be too bad considering he parked it right away and the oil had only a trace of shavings.

What works for me on diagnosing something like rod knock is to disconnect the coil/plug wire on one cylinder at a time. Start it and see if the noise changes. Most times it is pretty much a night and day difference when you disconnect the one with the problem.
I changed rod bearings in my 1995 (the result of my stupidity resulting in a bent rod). It was a pain and took probably 8 hours. Probably two of them dorking with those pan bolts above the kick out in the pan. I also wasted a good bit of time thinking through what had to be done to lower the pan (I did not have a shop manual).
I appreciate the closing of the loop on the thread and look forward to hearing what the problem actually is.

Jim and Mark, thanks for the feedback. Mike, if I decided to give it away, you were first on my list. No hard feelings I hope. Best wishes, Taro

No hard feelings, just thought you was waiting to see if you where selling or not. I was willing to pay just didn't know it was forsale yet.
I not sure if I'll sell the engine yet I might still find it a home(looks slim). The engine only had a little over 17,000 miles so basically new.
